Anyone tried to buy a M90 tranny in the States?

I have seen a lot of RWD Volvos on the web mated to FWD engines...

mainly the turbo 5 cylinders.

I am also pretty sure that the M90 tranny was NOT availble in the U.S.

Does the M90 bolt directly up to the 5 cylinder used in the 850/70 series?

What about the 6 cylinder used in the FWD S80 ?

Does anyone have technical info on mating the M90 to a FWD 5 or 6 cylinder engine?

Was the M90 available on Canadian models?

Has anyone tried to purchase a M90 from overseas, what type of prices were you qouted?

You might try contacting Mike Aaro at Unitek in Sweden. There is a link from the Turbobricks website (www.turbobricks.org). Feel free to write that I suggested you contact him. I think the cost would be something in the $1500 to $2000 range, but you may need more parts like pedal, flywheel, bell housing, and clutch assemblies that would increase the cost. Unitek can also supply a "built" M47 that is more of a direct fit and that can handle much more power than a stock M47. Of course, the old M46s can take a fair amount of power, but the OD needs to be updated to the latest type and even then additional pressure (using extra shims) may be necessary. And with any of these transmissions, a stronger than stock clutch should be used if power is increased more than about 25% over stock. And while you are at it, lighten the flywheel to about 15 pounds.

The 960/M90 combo was not sold in the US.

Also note that the engine used in this app is the B6254, and not the B6304 sold in the US. 2.5l vs. 3.0l. I'd guess that this means the M90 can't handle the torque generated by much more than 2.5 n/a liters.

The M90 is supposed to be the strongest box of them all. Itīs a highly desired upgrade and, used in the 940T which is much stronger (torque) than the 960 2.5, I donīt have any doubt about it.

The M90 was only used in the 960 (all manual cars) and the 940T from 1997 or something like it. That for sure is a limit when youīre trying to find one...btw, did they ever sell the manual 960 in the USA? In Sweden it became pretty common with manual and the 2.5 l engine (introduced 1995).

If youīre going for a FWD (850/70 etc) engine you should try finding an M90 out of a 960, it should fit the engine without further modifications. An M90 out of a 940 would require another bellhousing.

I don't know for sure, but I've read a few times that the 940 only came with an auto trans in the US.

Thatīs possible, I donīt know that much about the US speced cars. But the late 940T was, as far as I know, the only RWD car that came with an M90-red engine combination. Too bad for you if it was only in the european markets :-(
