Head removal 140-160 72

Are any special tools needed to replace the head on these old engines?

The factory manual shows a tool to help align the head with the block, do I really need it or is it worth getting/using?

Thanks!

Re: Head removal 140-160 72

Only special tool needed is a torque wrench. A pair of alignment bolts is usefull but not necessary. You can make your own by cutting the heads off a couple of old head bolts, and cut a slot in the top to help remove them with a screwdriver once the head is on. If you don't have old head bolts, you can pick up a couple long bolts or threaded rod at the local auto parts store.

Re: Head removal 140-160 72

How many will I need and where do I put them?

Do I put them in all the threads except the bolt I'm installing at the time or just the 4 corners?

Thanks Bob!

Re: Head removal 140-160 72

Use two — install 'em finger tight in diagonally opposite corners of the block and drop on the head. Install several head bolts adjacent to the alignment bolts, and then remove the alignment bolts.

Their only purpose is to align the head with the block as you install it, and two will do it. Once two head bolts are installed the alignment pins are unnecessary.

When I made mine, I found it very helpful to taper the tops (where I first ground off the bolt heads), and then used a hacksaw to cut screwdriver slots.

Sounds really easy. Thanks for the info!

does this method work for reinstalling a head on a OHC engine? (different bolts though)

"... method work for reinstalling a head on a OHC engine?"

Dunno. I've done a buncha B20's, but never a Volvo OHC engine (sorta speaks to the robustness of the design).

Can't see why not, though...... and it sure woudln't hurt to use 'em.......
