1991 240 Power windows won’t work 200

Hello all, my 91’s power windows won’t work. I’ve tried the fuses altho I seem to remember that there are two possible fuses that can not be making contact and keep the windows from working.
I have a Bentley manual, but my eyes aren’t that great and it’s hard for me to make out the diagram. Anyone have any ideas? Any idea where the relay is for instance? Any help appreciated.

Do you have cruise control, and if so, does it now not work?

If the answer is yes, then the relay behind the center console is bad and needs to be replaced.

Ask me how I know all this.

Regards,

Matt

Ask me how I know. How do you know? 200

Matt, I think the cruise depends on fuse 12, not the window lift relay. Could be the fuse was falling apart when you went into the dash for the relay and you got a coincidental fix when the fuse started making good contact again. In a 91 auto the definitive test for fuse 12 is the shift lock release. If the windows die (all of them) try the shift lock; if it is also non-functional, fuse 12 is cruddy. Also, it is an easier test than checking cruise control operation.

I do have the 91 manual. To emphasize Dave's advice, thoroughly test every combination of up/down, passenger and back seat switches carefully noting what works and doesn't. This will do wonders by directing you to the location of the trouble minus the guessing.

I'll add some advice of my own: The window lift relay is bulletproof, a metal cube relay, and buried behind the center vents -- not your first choice as a suspect. And I stress checking for power at the fuse terminals while operating the driver's door switch, for example. See that 12V using a test light or a meter gets to the right-hand fuse terminal before tearing anything else apart.

An elderly father asked his son if he could borrow a newspaper.

“Father, this is the 21st century,” replied the son. “I don’t waste my money on newspapers. But if you like, you can borrow my iPad.”

The spider never knew what hit it.

How do you get a person to read a book on reverse psychology?
By telling them not to read it.

I don’t know, but its flag is a big plus!

Associated fuses in later 240s should be #10 and #12 (I don't have a '91 diagram). Give them a spin and/or remove for careful inspection of the ends. Does the right front passenger window work from that door switch? Only If it doesn't work do you suspect the fuses, relay and associated wiring under the dash.

By far the most common issue when none of the windows work is a broken wire at the driver door hinge. Nothing will work from the driver switch pod and the rear door switches will also not work, but the RF door switch will work. It's the only switch that gets power directly from the central relay under the dash, not through the driver door. The rear switches get their power through the child lockout switch at the driver pod. It will normally be a broken red wire at the hinge, but could also be a black ground wire. Confirmation is to open up the driver door and firmly pull back on those wires. Repair can usually be made by peeling back the rubber boot at the pillar. Use a sleeve crimp, not solder. Move the break point out of the hinge area if possible so it doesn't soon fail again. Splice in a little extra wire if you need to.
