122s with a B20 E and a 32/36 DGEV Weber carb 120-130

First of all the car set for about 4 years and I would start up once a month or so.. When driving on the high way it seems to run great,, 70 mph or faster seems to be no problem until I take my foot of the gas in going down a hill or whatever,, when I step on the gas again it flubbers and blubbers , kicks and sometimes the engine seems to stop running for a few seconds,, when I floor the gas pedal it will start running well until I take my foot of the gas again... I have been driving around town and seems to run well except when I go down a long hill as in my last post.. I thought it might be water in the gas so I drained the tank and also blew out the fuel line from the fuel pump to the tank.. I have added some Seafoam cleaner which the neighbor suggested ...It ran great 4 years ago so not sure what is going on... I adjusted the electric choke . put a new gas filter on.. checked the small gas filter in the Weber.. I am running out ideas.. Anyone know what might going on.. Thanks in advance...

    Does it idle smoothly at about 900rpm? These Webers are notorious for being very picky about jetting and set up. The adjustment that gives a smooth transition when the second choke opens may need to be tweaked a bit. Perhaps the second choke isn't closing fully at low throttle positions. i.e. small amounts of pedal.

      Hi Derek...The car idles fine and runs fine... I can go up a hill in 4 th gear with no problem in fact it will pick up speed a it climbs,, But I make a u turn at the top of the hill after a gradual climb of approx 1/2 mile and go back down the hill gearing down to 2 nd and 3 rd gear to save the brakes,, reach the bottom and stop at the stop sign and begin to climb another hill and the car starts missing and barely running .. I can floor the gas pedal and it will begin to run ok again... This sometimes happens again when I take my foot off the gas at highway speed ... I have tried to set the electric choke but for some reason when I loosen the 3 screws and turn, the butter fly valve goes about 1/3 open as opposed to straight up and down .. Maybe the spring is too weak or something

        Robert;

        Because issue is associated with an attitude change, it sounds like there might be an issue with fuelbowl level, between going up and going down...could float be hanging up because of tilt?...is there any adjustment or way to check level in the bowl for that carb?

        Good Hunting!

          I have thought about the float as well.. I still have not taken it apart and looked yet as there is one big gasket that I am afraid of wrecking and I don`t have another one.. I will probably order a carb kit and there will be a gasket in there... To day I took the cover off of the electric choke and sprayed a lot of carb cleaner in and turned it back and forth to the limit about 3 or 4 times and that may have helped as it seemed to run better on the test drive after I changed the setting a bit as well.. My mother would have said " you should have tried that in the first place. " Anyway so far mostly Trial and error,,mostly error. I think a carb kit might help as well... Thanks for your tip..

            Hello,

            I called my Weber salesman at Redline and he had some suggestions.

            To start with, check the float level. FYI, there are updated float level instructions from Redline if you have ethanol in your fuel. The top cover gasket is usually reusable, but it's not a bad idea to have a spare handy.

            Also, check the fuel pressure. It should be 2.5-3.0 psi.

              I do not have a gauge to check the fuel pressure but we put in a new mechanical fuel pump recently... I drained the tank and blew out the fuel lines out as well as a new inline filter.. I thought I would find water in the gas but there was none.. There is ethanol in gas here... Checking the fuel level is a good idea as that is about the only thing I have not done yet.. Yesterday I had a perfect run except for one little miss,, last night I had to run down to the store and came down a short hill from my place and the same old flubbering happened again for a few seconds but not near as bad as in the past..

                I sort of mentioned this earlier but do both of your butterflies close down as they should? The second choke should be completely closed until you need it but if it was remaining open just a fraction that would allow some gas to get into the manifold and combustion chambers causing some random firing. This problem can also cause backfire f**ts. Going down hill with the throttle "closed" creates a good vacuum so will suck on the jets more.

                  It is very possible that you on were to something as I don`t think both valves were functioning properly as I did not have the idle screw set right.. I found this video on You Tube and I then I set the idle screw properly and it seems to have made the car run much better..Anyway,, so far so good.. There has never been any back firing that I know of.. I have started using premium gas for awhile as my neighbor suggested as there is no ethanol in premium. It is certainly running better the more I drive.. Maybe there was some varnish in the carb that is getting cleaned out with the Sea Foam cleaner that I dumped in the tank.. The symptoms that I witnessed when driving in the beginning are exactly the same as having water in the gas and after sitting for 4 years that was what I expected.. When I drained the tank I found no water but the gas was yellowish..Anyway there is good clean gas in the tank now..

                    That all sounds promising. As the B20E has a cr of 10.5:1 Premium is still less than what is designed to use so always use the best you can. If you don't do much mileage a ration of octane booster in each tank wouldn't go amiss.
                    Perhaps Webers always need an Italian tune-up. 😊

              Thanks Eric.. I ordered a carb kit yesterday.. I just got back from one of my many test runs of up hills, down hills, high way speed and flat out and it ran perfectly except for one little burble on the highway at about 50 mph after coming down a steep hill when being geared down to 2nd.. I tweaked the choke just a little last night so maybe I hit the sweet spot.. I will park it for the winter in about a month so I will do the carb as well a few other things.. I think I should replace some bushings as some came with car anyway.. When test driving when it was running so rough now and again I felt quite jolt in the rear axel , I think...Thanks for your advice.!! Robert
