Transmission Locked, over ride button does not function 200 1993

Hi,

I'm curious as to whether you got your car moved?

I have had my first automatic transmission on a 240 for a few years now and have not had your problem before.
I was aware of a possible release mechanism located somewhere around the shifter cover but I never researched how to use it or where to look.

I can get in the car from either front side door, push down the button on the top and pull it out of Park.
In fact, I can actually snag it out of any gear and probably not having to push the button down very far at all.
I push my car back and forth all the time, within a parking space length to wash it and not fire the car up to move it back inside again.
Now I think my shifting lock out mechanism doesn't work at all.
Frankly, I haven't missed the idea of having to step on the brakes to move it at anytime!

I looked in the Bentley bible and they show an illustration of a human hand reaching with a finger down into that fuzzy brush filled slot. It shows a lever in there that moves up and down in.
Page 435-8 upper right corner.

My lever is right at the bottom of the slot.
I found it at the very bottom end, opposite the Park detent. There is a solid lever sticking up very near there and practically ready to stick out.
I can barely get my big finger in between the outer cases slot and that lever.
The illustration shows the finger in a curled position pulling that lever up.
It's really stiff and doesn't appear to want to move much. It seems quite tight to me on my car!

The Bentley manual says there is a relay someplace that energizes the solenoid when the brake pedal is pushed down, as the relays contacts are wired in series with the brake lights power.

This is where it gets confusing to me.
It says you turn on the key and it actuates the relays magnetic coil. This connects the two together. Brake lights and the solenoid being powered up pulls the pin out of the mechanism and you get to go down the road!
There is a diagram on that same page above that shows this. Only the fuse numbers are wrong for the 1992-3 models.
The 7&12 fuses are correct as the other post, in this thread, stated according to wiring diagrams in another section.
Are your brakes lights coming on? On some cars, if you don't have instrument cluster lights, check
for brake lights! This was before bulb out sensors!
If your switch to the brake lights fail or the brake lights are not getting power in the first place, the shifter doesn't get its pin pulled.
If the relay doesn't close from the ignition switch being on, the shifter doesn't get its pin pulled!
If the relays internal contacts don't function correctly, the shifter doesn't get its pin pulled!
If the solenoid has an open coil or is jamming up from dirt and trash, it cannot pull the pin back either!
No wonder they put in an override system!
There is a "faith" that it could "inherently" fail!

I imagine I will have to investigate how it works "someday" by taken that cover off and doing a rehearsal.
I'm suspicious that I will find that there is "something" missing!
If so, I will close it up and leave it that way!

My wife and I have the long time acquired a habit of applying brakes anytime we start a vehicle.
In fact, I see her and many other people of whom just sit in their cars, with the engine on or off, with their foot on the brake pedal while talking or driving their thumbs around in circles on key pads!

Maybe with a key on for the radio or a charging circuit, its what happens!
It burns out, that supposedly "temporarily ON circuit."
