Dave Barton is a great resource.

I have bought some of his repro harnesses and they are top notch.

But he needs to get a licensing agreement with Volvo to keep them off of his back for using their name and or logo on some of his products.

Every time I have my business cards made, I have to pay a licensing fee through the printer for using Volvos name and logo.

I am going to assume the licensing process won't be cheap, mostly because lawyers on both sides will have to be paid.

And Dave wouldn't be the 1st person to be forced to shut down production for some products due to the cost of litigation.

Agree here. Volvo(Corporation) or rather Geely could care less about "petitions"

        Been that way for YEARS.

        Electronics giant defeats restaurant owner
        March 19, 1991

BALTIMORE -- A city restaurateur's fight against an electronics giant over her nickname ended Tuesday when the name 'Sony' came off her signs.

Four years ago, Japanese electronics manufacturer Sony Corp. sued Sony Florendo to get her to drop her nickname from her establishments.

Florendo had until Tuesday to take the name 'Sony' off the signs on her restaurants at Harborplace and in Owings Mills, her banquet hall and her main office downtown.

I think it's unfortunate that a lot of folks look at the big corps as the 'evil entity' in these types of deals. Fact is that if you (or a corporation) doesn't legally protect it's brand/trademarks/copyrights/etc. - then after a certain period of time and use by others, they lose the right to protect it. So, the law more of less forces them to go after anyone if they want to maintain the right to go after a BIG offender. Such is life.

            Who are you.

It was her NAME. She used her own name.
She started with one small family run resturant in the mid 1970's. SONY's in downtown Baltimore...great food.

By the mid 1980s she had expanded to 3.

You also think that Corporations have your Best Interests in mind when they put Untestest 4400lb Volvos on the Road "Self Driving"...
Then when there is a "problem" like people get killed...I guess it's in Our Best Interest that they withhold data as "proprietary" Corporation EYES Only.

                funny thing is
You started this posting with a petition to Volvo to give a pass on Dave Barton.
When you got 2 responses saying that it wouldn't work
You switched and defended the corp that was trying to shut off Dave Barton.

If you knew/believed this about Corps "defending" their brand/name. Then WHY did you start the petition and this Thread.

AS for me. CB is who I registered as sometime in the late 1990's. Due to a "computerG;itch" I am not recognized, but if I try to re-reg I'm told that that handle is already taken...Yes I know...it's me CB.

It is You that are confused.

LOL....and you still won't say who you are....not surprised.

I put the petition out here because I thought there might be people that wanted to sign the thing to support Dave's work. Just as I signed it. I didn't defend Volvo Corp for their position -- I simply explained WHY they (and others) take the position they do. It's clear based on your response that that's a bit too nuanced for you.

I also don't think the petition will change Volvo's position -- but I want to support Dave, whom I'm a customer of many times over. Sometimes you 'fight the fights' that need to be fought, not just the ones you think you can win. As for your friend Sony, sounds to me like you need to run for office on a platform of changing trademark law -- that's where the issue lies, not with the enforcement. There's that danged nuance again.

But -- enough of this distraction -- we're all free to do what we like with regard to Dave's stuff. I suggested to him that he rebrand all the stuff with "VOLVO" on it to "LOLVO", take advantage of the parody loophole -- something he was already thinking of. I think that's an even better way to respond to our friends at Volvo Corp.
