1997 V90, rear shocks??? 900

My '97 V90 needs rear shocks, rather badly. My local suppliers, and the net, seem to require a different shock after 5/97 and do not even list a shock for pre 5/97. My car is 1/97. Can anyone tell me what the difference is? And, where to find shocks for it.

If you want to go all-out and money is no object you can get an awesome suspension. Custom springs from stock rate to lowered race and rebuildable struts. I wish this was around when I bout my car in 2006 because it was a big step down from Bilsteins on my 94 960 to Monroe-mush that is not even gas-charged.

"If you use Volvo shocks, look for the shock code contained on the plate on top of the radiator, 5th line, 4th character. My 4th line was blank. IE, 031Y35a, 'Y' is the shock code. [Editor] Consensus on Brickboard seems to criticize OEM shocks and recommend aftermarket.

Aftermarket Shocks for S90/V90 Cars. [Eric Seeger] There's finally an aftermarket alternative for our rear shocks! Monroe Sensa-Trac part #5979 is the new (and as far as I can tell, the only) aftermarket alternative for V90 and part #5978 is for S90 sedans. These are replacement for NON-Nivomat rear shocks. Aftermartket Nivomat replacements are available from Monroe as well. I got a pair installed on my wife's V90 tonight, and I can say that they work very well. At Sears, they cost $110 for the pair installed."

I called Monroe after having heard of the 5979, it is no longer available and there is no compatible model. I was told they make nothing for the Volvo V90, except front struts. I have seen them on eBay. I guess that is next.

I found a pair of Monroe 5979 at an online supplier, it was their last pair. If anyone else is in my position, as of this date, Walmart's website indicates that they have one pair left. higher price than other supplier so I went with the other. I believe Amazon also listed them, at a still higher price.

I had called Monroe, they advised that they were out of production and that they had nothing compatible.

        Dear Faust,

Hope you're well. Does Volvo no longer supply any of the shocks listed in my post?

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook

    Dear Faust,

Hope you're well. The rear shocks for V90s apparently have letters stamped into them. Which part number - and the prices - depends critically on that letter. As I do not own/operate any V90, I do not know where this marking might be on the shock housing.

According to Volvo VADIS (a superseded dealer parts/service database):
If the letter "V" is present, the replacement part is #221897 ($343).
If the letter "Z" is present, the replacement part is #272209 ($282).
If the letter "W" is present, the replacement part is #272220 ($159).
The prices shown are retail at a US Volvo dealer.

I do not know how these parts differ, one from another. Perhaps these units have different load-bearing capacity. As to that, I'll defer to Board's 960/S/V90 experts.

    Hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

I think the only difference is if you have nivomats or not. I installed the standard shocks on our '97 with no issues. Very easy install
