Is this the end... 200 1993

My beloved 245 m47 transmission had the drive shaft take out the rear cover and roller bearing. Chassis and motor are awesome IDP sways and springs even IDP seat covers! Any chance someone has a trashed m47 they could sell me these parts off? Or is it time to part it out...

Any and all help is much appreciated.

    Just like to know.

You did post this thread here:

    1993 245 m47 5th gear vibration 200 1993
    Mon Jul 18 07:23 CST 2016

    https://www.brickboard.com/RWD/volvo/1635112/220/240/260/280/1993_245_m47_5th_gear_vibration.html

I've also encountered a loose or barely tightened to snug retaining nut that secures the output flange to the output shaft on the M47 (and other) transmission(s).

    What broke?

    A u-joint?

    Carrier bearing assembly and bushing?

The rubber giubo (some call guibo) flex coupler secured at the M47 II output flange and the very front of the drive shaft?

Broken / failed motor mounts / transmission mount?

    Gear box oil level?

Too many burnouts and too much drifting on a welded open diff with 17" 10" wide wheels / tires on dry concrete / asphalt. (Just kidding. Sort of. People to this to poor 240, versus learning how build them up and top learn to race them. They'll 'turbo' a 1992 B230F and wonder why something breaks.)

    A combination?

    Curious. Glad you are okay.

M47 disassembly is a pain. Yet you seem to have done so. Mine was the inner transmission selector shaft seal on the inner wall of the rear splash chamber. The M47 is needlessly complicated while such a frail beast requiring some (I'll tell yeh) hhhwhut vigilant care.

From a 740, so not entirely the same, yet linkage and bell housing may swap, that is if this is actually worthy. Hopefully has the CPS notch for EZK116 as yours has. This has been for sale for a long, long time.

Says M47 transmissions. In Saylorsburg, PA state:

    Try eBay

On the brickboard CLASSADS, we have Frank Ponte in NJ and his Volvo parts stash:

    Classified for sale on Turbobricks:

    Requires account.

Not much at all on the iPd USA classifieds:

Indeed, if you want an AW7x auto. Later models have a ball bearing out put shaft and not some plastic bushing output shaft. I guess that's better.

Maybe ask the various Volvo, Volvo 240, Volvo 7x0 (740), Volvo 240 fan club, and other resources on facebook, though it sll seems sort of sketchy.

    Questions,

    Hope that helps yoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo ....

Yes and I had it repaired and the nut that holds the drive shaft backed off again as they did not use a new one or enough locktite...

So, you mean the nut that secures the M47 II output flange was not tightened enough?

Or, what nut do you mean, Boys Brick?

What nut that holds the drive shaft? Three hardware stacks (nut, bolts) for the output flange to the flex coupler giubo. Three to secure the drive shaft front end to the giubo. Giubo has a front facing side. Also, of the six holes in the flex coupler giubo, two set of three are for the out flange to giubo securing hardware stacks (nuts, bolts), and two sets of three for the giubo to drive shaft interface.

Try doing this as a severe dyslexic as you're under the 240. Humorous results ensue, or not so humorous. So you take it all apart and go at it again.

I've encountered these as loose. The M47 output change retaining nut. Well, to snug, barely. Used a chain wrench on the output shaft as counter hold, and using the nut that was there, applied more than adequate torque. Though a new nylon lock nut may be best, the environment is bathed in gear box oil lube a bit.

I donut recall whether the M47 or M47 II out put flange retaining nut was any sort of lock nut, however. Those as they are loose .... wish I had grabbed the junkyard M47s and brought them home. Started a family.

Son's car blew up its M47 a couple of years ago. Sourced a used one (~90K miles) from a yard in Boston, shipped to MN a week later, total cost was right around $400. It had a 90-day warranty, but was still running great when we sold the car last spring.

That said, I've got a '91 245 with an M47 as my daily driver. If mine goes, I may look into a T5.

    Best regards!

hianders- found your suggestion about a t5 trans to replace the disappearing m47s interesting. who makes the t5 and how adaptable is it really? if you could get one at a reasonable price i would think the adapting and modifying it to work would be big $$$.custome welding usually sends one to the cleaners. 3 points concern me : driveshaft modication, custom adapters to mate the trans to the bell and crossmember support member mods. what think you? thanks tons oldduke

In my world if the body is good I'm still going to fix it. Tranny is no big, a little patience will find one, or upgrade to a t5 or easier better upgrade M46. In the north and rust belt these cars and drive trains are inexpensive.

Not sure where you are located. If in/near the PNW, try contacting Larry at Rainbow Auto Service in Bellingham, WA. I know he is having to get ride of a large number of vehicles from his collection. Perhaps he has something?

hi boy brick- thats a tough one. better keep checking ebay , volvo sites and yards. have one in my 92 245 which works fine now even at 250k, but know when it blows, parts are n/a and used ones are few and far between. i would start emailing and phoning yards in your state and nearby states. you could then drive your 41 packard to a near state yard to pick up and avoid being soaked by shippers. watch out for low down high smelling shysters who abound in this conundrum. regards oldduke
