OEM motor mounts 200 1988

Just purchased/received Volvo motor mounts (made in Turkey) and they have a metal disc on one side about and 1/8 of an inch. Which way do these mount and why? I am thinking disc side down to absorb vibration but..........

Hi joekidd,

The disc side face up. It evens out the stress load. Do you see my new engine mount getting split in half?

As always, thank you.

Hi joekidd,

The motor mounts you have should have a steel plate surface on each flat side. One each side there is a threaded stud and an alignment pin to both align and secure the motor mount to the engine mount bracket and the lower cross-member mount bracket.

If using a trolley, or floor jack to raise the engine, DON'T:
- use the oil pan to raise the engine . The oil pan is not meant endure engine weight and will cavitate, damaging the oil pump.
- use the harmonic balancer crank pulley either to raise the engine.
- use the thin aluminum metal that guards the timing belt behind the harmonic balancer crank pulley as the thin aluminum alloy will probably fracture at the worst or you can dislodge the entire timing cover causing severe oil leak at the least.

Some may use the alternator bracket with bottle nose jack. Some may use an overhead lift method.

A Mounting Problem - Diagnosing & Replacing 240 Engine Mounts

iPd, FCP Euro, and Tasca sell these motor mounts. Images courtesy of iPd:

Right North American passenger side motor mount:

As you can see in these iPd USA Volvo standard (versus the more durable diesel 240) motor mount images, both sides have a steel plate with threaded stud and alignment pin.

I'm unsure, yet I believe, if yours appear the same, the seam around the bushing material circumference closest to one flat side of the mount usually points up.

The proof of fitment will show in the fitting. One alignment pin is either longer or of a larger diameter. One of the threaded studs on one side may be longer. However, I'm unsure.

Yet both sides of the mount should be a hard steel with hardware.

Images of what you have in hand would help us to help you what you mean.

Questions?

Hope that helps.

All good info thks. Look at the pictures you posted. Do you see how the one side has the 1/8 inch plate?

1/8" plate?

To use two example images of the Left North American driver side motor mount (the smaller one the engine pulls on when revving):

What I believe to point (towards the engine bracket) up as the bushing mold has a seam around the circumference:

What I believe to point (towards the cross member bracket) down as the bushing mold has a seam around the circumference away from the camera (opposite side):

What is the 1/8 inch plate in the image?

The bushing is composed of two round, flat steel plates with the alignment pin and the threaded stud secure to the plate. Each of the plates are bound to the bushing material. There is a seal around the bushing material the hides the edge of the plate.

So, I probably confused as to what you mean.

Though install orientation become evident as you position the bushing into the upper and lower brackets each side. That is, if there is an orientation. It's been about four years I've performed this task.

Thanks,
