DOH! Should the headlights come on 92' 240 when brake pedal pushed?!?!?!?

Ok, whoever swapped auto to manual tranny on this San Fran car, to Columbus, Ohio transplant must have swapped up some wires presumably at the brake pedal? The headlights come on when brake pedal is pushed. Sometimes but, not every time! Meaning it is intermittent. Sometimes, you push the brake pedal, no headlights come on, other times, push the brake pedal, and headlights come on! No s==t!

I bought this POS wagon with a known bad trans in Columbus, ohio and have been regretting it ever since. Whoever, did this swap, (someone swapped auto to manual before I stupidly bought it) is obviously not a BB or TB member. There were a lot of things done wrong. Like, they put the wrong clutch cable in, and the pedal released very high in the travel. They also didn't clean the trans that was in it so, everything was greasy as hell, or replace the rear main seal, pilot bearing or cable. I now have the bad trans swapped with a good one. Also, replaced all above items. The only luck I have had on this car is they put a brand new sachs clutch in it. It now shifts great and the clutch pedal feels right and releases etc. correctly.

But, there are also elect. gremlins. The above mentioned headlights coming on when brake pedal is pushed, the rear defogger switch sometimes comes on in unison with the headlights. Also, the radio will only come on when the ign switch is at position II, with all the dashlights. I realize the radio is a separate issue. Any help is appreciated.

As others have said - your problem is most likely grounds.

The grounding system is where all circuits come together.

One quick fix - actually a decent troubleshooting step - is to add some extra grounds.

If you do that one at a time and check your devices in between, you may actually find the fault!

Multiple items seldom go bad all at once - and a bad device does not cause other things to work.

See this post above for example -

You have my sympathy 200 1992

The wiring diagrams on volvowiringdiagrams.com are going to be your reading material as you tear into this. You might consider removing the dash to make it more comfortable as you work through this and, undoubtedly other misdeeds.

Shirley someone will tell you to "check the grounds."

Actually, I was playing Art's Leslie Neilson character from "Airplane" with the don't call me Shirley bit.

No one knows more about 240 electrical stuff than Art. I do know that the grounds for my headlights (940) are up at the front of the fenders and do cause many issues. I believe, the brake light switch operates by grounding the the circuit so it could be creating an alternate path to ground for the headlight relay...but not the headlights themselves. this is assuming your headlight turn off with with the ignition as all 240's from 1992 in the US.
