Severe surging leading to engine harness replacement 200 1984

I figure it is a normally aspirated B23F motor, as k-jet cars don't have "fuel rails" and the answer is your second suggestion: clogged (or smashed) return line. Many opportunities for this on the way to the junction over the rear axle and again in the tank sender. Next regulator replacement should include blowing through the return line.
