washing the motor 200 1993

1993 240 wagon. i'm wondering how you guys go about washing (or pressure washing) the motor and everything under the hood. i had an oil leak when i bought it a few weeks ago and think i fixed it but i'm not sure what i need to avoid when washing it to get all the old junked up oil out.

I have read dozens of posts from people who regret washing their engines.

You can ruin some expensive parts.

My dealer refuses to do it

I use rags and Kerosine on metal parts - or WD-40 on plastic and rubber. I use old socks for tight spaces. Scraping and brushing helps on heavy stuff - i use an electric tooth brush for fine work.

BTW WD-40 is not a lubricant.

After cleaning, I like to spray some things with plastic-friendly silicone spray. Silicone is plastic friendly, some of the cheaper propellants are not.

Do not use Armor All on rubber - my tire guy tells me that it is bad for rubber. I also knew a guy (nicknamed -the Armor All Guy) who fell and broke his lower leg when he slipped and fell off his running board that he had used his favorite chemical on.

A brickboarder (on Cape Cod i think) does some items in an old dishwasher!

"A brickboarder (on Cape Cod i think) does some items in an old dishwasher! "

To my recollection, Don's famous cap'n'wires wash used the dishwasher in the kitchen, although it could, like mine, be an old dishwasher. I spent the evening last night taking our "old" dishwasher down to the motor shaft to pick out all the tiny pieces of an exploded piece of Corelle. (If I ever do that again, I will try to remember to wear some gloves.)

What engineers say and what they mean by it:
"Close project coordination"
We should have asked someone else; or, let's spread the responsibility for this.

I won't embed the video here because I already put it on the Opinions forum which the link below will take you to.

As the saying goes, your results may vary.

The power washing may have caused some of the spark plugs to misfire causing fuel to travel into the exhaust system where it ignited, exploded and blew part of the catalytic converter out the tailpipe. And possibly opened up a hole in the exhaust under the car. Further attempts to blow the rest of the cat out may have introduced raw fuel and flame to the underside of the car.

Given the choice of Art's method or power washing, I power wash.

Of note, you wrote, "the cat to which I refer is a catalytic converter". Other than the subject line, the only reference to "cat" was in the video.

You'll get a lot of different answers on this. For me, it is a one time thing, and it occurs when we acquire the car.

I've always had some consequence using a pressure washer or even just a forceful garden hose. If it wasn't getting water forced in someplace it shouldn't have been, it was getting it bounced back in my face.

Best results for me have been with the slow approach without water: Starting with a putty knife and finishing with a toothbrush and a cotton swab. Well, the finish level is optional. Wadded newspaper takes the bulk of the oily dirt away, and small amount of kerosene or Simple Green make good finishing solvents used with paper towels.

My objective is to be able to see leaks and make working on the car less cleanup intensive. But sometimes you gotta take things apart to get at the dirt.

By all means marry. If you get a good wife, you'll be happy. If you get a bad one, you'll become a philosopher. Socrates
