Wet No Start - Again & Again Ready To Junk It ! 200 1989

Hi Everyone:

Again I'm back with my 89 240 wet, foggy, misty, rainy no start condition.
In my previous posts I was advised to change spark plug wires, dist. cap, perhaps rotor and maybe coil (by a local friend).
I have done none of this - have had other problems to tend to (timing belt, brakes, master cylinder etc... - apologies. : )

So, I have another symptom that occurs now that is really unpleasant -
no fuel gauge, tach and no speedo(if I do get it running when wet).

Today I tried to start it after sustained period of wet - drizzle - mist - fog.
Sometimes I can get it to start by holding the gas pedal all the way down - but no way today.
Fuel gauge does not work and I get no tach bumps etc.

I'm getting to the point where I am afraid the problem is beyond worth fixing.

Wife also reports when driving car after wet event when car does start - no speedo.

Any advise other than scrap it?

I had a similiar problem that turned out to be the corrsion on the AMM connector
It swelled up to break the connection every time it was very moist out side. I cleaned the connector--sprayed it with WD40 and BOOM good starts from then on!!

Hi: just replaced the CPS about 18 months ago with a new OEM CPS and tied the line off with a wire tie to stop movement.
      I will check though.
      Thanks

checking water leak spot 200 1989

          Hi cgilmore,

          1. Next Wed or Thurs night, it looks like it's going to be 40s in your area.

          2. Get on a highway.

          3. Turn on the heater fan high, make sure windshield defroster vent is closed.

          4. Warm up one of your hand, get nice & toasty.

          5. Now, feel for cold air by putting your hand to the windshield edge.

          6. If there is a leak, you should feel cold air at the tip of your fingers.

          7. Go over the top, side & bottom of your windshield. You can also check your door seal.

          8. Ask you spouse to check on the passenger side.

These are two known spots. Good luck.

An 89 needs TLC - watch this space 200 1989

On TB your advice would be "crush it" by consensus.

My advice is ask your wife. Then either begin to wade through the collection of issues because you really do love the car, or well, you know.

I am guessing you have a windshield leak. Water is following the wiring harness down into your speedometer connection (the L-shaped plug) and probably into your fuse panel as well. This is probably not the no-start issue, as you can start and run your car with no fuses in that interior panel. But the tach/gauge trouble is at the ignition switch or the L-shaped plug on the cluster.

Thanks for the reply and info. I know the sunroof leaks and there is another leak that gets into the ignition and fuel computers as well as onto the fuel pump relay.
It is a hard decision to keep on with the 240 - I like it. It is just not knowing what the real wet no start issue is - don't want to chase my tail or throw parts at the car (and money) blindly.
      Regards,
      Chuck

Very likely wet start issues related to Cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires. Get Quality Bosch, Bougicord, and copper plugs.

          Thanks Dan.
I know I have to start with what you recommend.
My fear is a more serious problem such as an insidious wiring harness problem or water leak into ecu area may also be causing the problem and that the cap, rotor, plugs, and plug wires will have been a waste.
I do realize you are correct as to the most likely failure points.
          Thanks,
          Chuck

Hmmm. You already suspect water on the passenger side too? I'd check this out if I were interested in saving a plugs-wires-and-cap expense. Seems like many forget to replace relays, such as the fuel injection relay, the way they were installed. Maybe even back to your previous owner. When the water can follow the wires into the relay, the damage is done -- they need a drip loop.

Look at the FI relay. It should be clipped to the spring steel snap retaining the ignition computer, not hanging by its harness. While you are under there, examine the ICU and the ECU for signs of water entry.

Water finds its way inside through many paths, so if you can't troubleshoot while it is raining, you could pressurize the car when it isn't.

Art, is that an AfterMarket Volvo Suicide attachment? Or is that the original Optional Package that came with the Volvo Blue stethscope and VOCA Kill stickers

OMG! That is what it looks like! Yikes.

Actually the hose is connected to a shop vac's exhaust, not the car's. I need to redo that one with a wider angle.

Unless you are willing to spend money on routine maintenance items you may as well get rid of it.

IF you choose to sell this 1989 240 sedan, you make mention right here on this brickboard FIRST.

You should get other brickboarders responding to buy your 1989 240 sedan for sale.

Sell it, and some one else will fix it.

TOO many 240s going to scrap for VERY MINOR issues.

Even some so-called enthusiasts won't get down to the brass tax on service issues, and drive it till it dies.

Any rear wheel drive (RWD) Volvo can last forever WITH care.

I hope you are able to fix it applying all suggestions you read here from all these brickboard folks that really do care about a company that really did care about what it broght to market for sale. That Volvo PV 444, P130 GT Amazon, the mighty mighty Volvo 164, the venerable 240, and so forth to the last day the last 1998 940 rolled off the line.

Yeah, I know we have the 960/90 series, yet, well, with care, and properly tuned, a 960/90 would be sweet, with a manual transmission. A big, strong Getrag, to be sure.

              cheers,

              The Buttermilk Running Chronicles.
