Fuel pump terminals....dodgy old repair 200

Well, as the cars we love age along with us, we find along the way bits about their history. For example, past repairs carried out in hasty and sometimes tasteless fashion.

I have an 88 245 and was moments ago about to replace the main fuel pump. A couple weeks ago I took pride in ordering a proper Bosch pump. I felt it would be a disservice to the car to put anything less in place, but as I get the pump and filter assembly down, what do I discover? A no name pump that is now mocking me. In particular the wiring connections, you see, as whoever installed it had to cut out the factory terminals and splice on simple ring terminals! I usually like surprises, but not in this case!

Aside from a parts car, does anyone have any tips on where I could source original style push-on terminals? Is there a way to modify the Bosch pump so it will accept ring terminals?

    These terminals have no proper substitute. Yes, I ordered something similar from Waytek Wire 15 years ago when I first discovered Volvos. Sorry, but nothing fits but the real ones from Bosch.

    Volvo dealer should have 3523813 pigtails. Google that number.

    In the catalog above, I'd tell you which ones fit and what pieces you need, but I'm not sure, because so far, I've been able to get what I need from junk cars and re-use them. If you can't find a replacement harness for under the seat, that pigtail is what you want two of, along with the housings 1307035 to snap into and seal inside the tubes on your new genuine Bosch pump. I'm picky about the connections under the car in the slop, especially those carrying appreciable current for a vital function. They need to provide contact pressure for the lowest contact resistance, over the time they will be exposed in that environment.

    I hope you can help me here. The other day, I set off for work leaving my husband in the house watching the TV as usual. I hadn't driven more than a mile down the road when the engine conked out and the car shuddered to a halt. I walked back home to get my husband's help. When I got home I couldn't believe my eyes.     Dear Sheila:

    A car stalling after being driven a short distance can be caused by a variety of faults with the engine. Start by checking that there is no debris in the fuel line. If it is clear, check the vacuum pipes and hoses on the intake manifold and also check all grounding wires. If none of these approaches solves the problem, it could be that the fuel pump itself is faulty, causing low delivery pressure to the carburetor float chamber. I hope this helps.

    Push on terminals can be found in packs at any autopart store...these will fit onto the Bosch terminal.

    I've done this repair, using the push terminal..cutting off the Plastic that comes on it and sliding the metal connector into a cut piece of clear plastic hose of the right size...in lengths from any home depot/lowes.

    seal where the wire fits into the hose/connector with Silicone Sealant. Let Set.

    Get 2 spark plug wire Cap ends ...the ones that cap the wire where it plugs into the distributor. Pass the plastic covered business end that will connect to the pump thru that cap (like the plug wire passes thru the cap). Make the connection to the pump. Push the cap onto the pump post to seal out any water.

    If there is a gap where the plastic passes thru the cap, seal with Silicone sealant.

    That's a shame, I think I would transplant in a replacement harness from a junkyard car. Trace the wiring back to where it inters the body. Hopefully there will be a connection plug on the inside. If there isn't cut it at that point, and solder and heat shrink the connections.

      The fuel pump harness might be available, but I can't say for sure. I do know however that there is a spade terminal and ground screw under the back seat on the drivers side. Fuel pump harness unplugs there. It's two wires, only about 20 inches long.
