How do I remove the "detent ring' at bottom of M47 shifter? 200

My reverse lever broke inside my gear shifter.
In the Bentley 430-3 it says with a picture that
the 'detent ring' that holds the bottom of that
arm down is removable, but I can't get that rubber
piece out...
any advice is appreciated.

How do I remove the "detent ring' at bottom of M47 shifter? 200 1989

Let me better explain this problem.
My standard does not go into reverse.
When I removed the shift knob I saw that
the upper end of the lever that one pulls
up to engage the reverse is broken. I need
to remove the gear shift arm, but I cannot
figure out how to remove that rubber plug/screw
that attaches the lower end of that lever down.
It looks like a rubber plug. I've pulled, pushed,
and turned it but I cannot get it out so that
I can remove that lever/arm that allows the car
to go into reverse and try to fix it or replace it.

    Thanks in advance.

I found this picture of an M46 shifter that I think is the same as the M47 it may help?

It looks like a rubber plug coving up the screw behind it?

The black piece that looks like a screw, is not. It is plastic and merely snaps in to the white reverse lockout from the inside. You will need to remove the pin that holds the top half of the shifter and pull it off. then it just pops out.

Dan, that is great. Mine is like the one on the far left.
Yet, I looks like a screw in that white plastic piece, but I can look into the slot on
It's head and see through it and see metal in the back.
It won't budge, turn, or pull out. I am damaging it little
By little. It is still installed in the car at this time.
Any advice is appreciated, and by the way thanks for
        The picture.

          NewMex,

For now, to get the car into reverse, you can remove the lockout bracket on the left side of the shifter top.

I believe it was held by 2 8mm hex screws on mine. This WON'T fix the broken lockout part inside your lever, but it will let you drive. It WILL become annoying if you accidentally select Reverse when you want 1st gear.

You need to get the whole shift lever out of the car.

You may find it easier to access without the driveshaft in place, but it can be done up over it, if things aren't too stuck.

First off, jack the car securely, so you can safely work under the center of the car.

You need to remove the set screw in the bottom center of the shift lever, from below. It's up inside your grimy narrow rear of the trans tunnel. 4mm allen wrench required.

Once that's out, slide out the shift linkage rod to separate the linkage from the bottom of the shift lever. It should have plastic spacers on either side but they might be worn out or missing.

Now go up top. Pull your shifter boot back and free the plastic push-rivets from under the carpet, and pull the boot up. This part requires strong fingers, I find.

Remove the shifter lockout bracket. 2 screws. Remove the snap ring, which requires pretty hefty snap ring pliers or just the right small flat screwdriver.

There's a collection of rings and teflon hemispheres around the shifter ball. It'll all come out. Pay attention to the order of the pieces, maybe take pictures.

Now you can work on your shifter as seen in the pictures, or replace it. The shift knob is just banged onto the top of it by friction, and under the knob is a little counterweight.

          Good luck!
