1969 145 running poorly and low engine temperature 140-160

A few hours into a 6 hour highway I was making in my 145 I noticed the engine temp dropping to well below normal (this car normally runs warm and can overheat in stop and go traffic so this is abnormal). Soon after, I noticed that the engine had no low end power, but would rev fine once it was above 3000 RPM or so. It would start and idle fine (and had low end torque until about 1250 RPM) but had no midrange. Eventually, I couldn't even get it up to speed without going through the gears up to 3rd or 4th and then dropping it down to 1st or 2nd to get the revs high enough to have power again. I had noticed a slight misfire in the midrange for the previous week but nothing this bad. I was hoping to make it home and diagnose the problem before it got this bad.

Any ideas? I was thinking it could be vacuum leak but it doesn't seem like anything I've heard of before.

You mention overheating in stop and go...

I'd say you're low on coolant. Way low. And you are overheating, big time. The temp gauge might read cool if the sender is not submerged in coolant, even though the the motor is running so hot that it no longer runs well, and is perhaps about to seize.

I've seized these engines due to overheat/low-no coolant, never with permanent issue. So I'd not be worried. Check coolant, and thermostat replacement might be an issue.

What type of ignition and carburation is in this car?

My suggestion is to check your ignition system first.
Always make sure your ignition system is in order before moving on to the fuel system.

Though it does sound like you may have a cooling system issue too, I doubt it is the cause of your lack of power.
Start with the basics and don't waste time and money throwing parts at this without a proper diagnosis.

A 140 series Volvo is a very simple car.

Low temperature can only be blamed on a bad gauge or a problem in the cooling system.

I think that a new Volvo thermostat is in order - that may even cure your overheating as well.

Your cooling system is no place to scrimp on parts - go to Volvo.
