You mention overheating in stop and go...

I'd say you're low on coolant. Way low. And you are overheating, big time. The temp gauge might read cool if the sender is not submerged in coolant, even though the the motor is running so hot that it no longer runs well, and is perhaps about to seize.

I've seized these engines due to overheat/low-no coolant, never with permanent issue. So I'd not be worried. Check coolant, and thermostat replacement might be an issue.
