Wiper motor issues 444-544 1962

I just picked up a '62 PV 544, and am just now beginning to dive into some of the issues with the car.

The first one is the wiper motor. Very important where I am considering how much it rains here! (I'm in Portland, for those that wonder.)

The current motor moves the wipers very slowly across the window. They also don't automatically return to their parked position when the switch is turned off.

What's the process for pulling the motor out? Is it similar to a 122? (I've had the wiper out of my 122 before).

Is it possible to retrofit a 2 speed wiper motor in place of the single speed? If so I'd love details about how that is done.

Many more questions to come. Thanks as always!

Like others have stated, I haven't been able to find a 2 speed wiper motor for the PV series.

If cleaning your motor doesn't help, the tailgate wiper from a 245 (again, as others have already mentioned) is very close to a direct fit. You have to change the wiring terminals (from rings to spades), and because yours is a '62 (which should have SAE hardware), you'll have to use the matching (probably metric) nuts to secure the motor to the mounting bracket.

Other than that, it's a perfect fit. I've used these in a few PVs, both my own and others.

Hope that helps.

Hi All!

I'm actually working on a kit that would convert a 1 speed PV wiper motor to a 2 speed, using the switch from a 122.

I'll post more details when the time arrives.

Wiper motor issues 444-544 1962

I had the same issue on my '63 (12V) car. Fairly heavy current pull, very little movement. I took it out and the problems I found were:
1) 40 year old dried up grease. Cleaned everything and lightly regreased
2) The brushes on the motor were still good, but conductive gunk had built up between the contacts, so current could shunt around to the other brush that way, instead of going through the windings. Cleaned out the gunk and very lightly polished the commutator again

Works just fine now. The parking works too, once you have it apart the switch on the gear box is fairly self-explanatory - it might just be sprung open, or the contacts may have built up unconductive gunk.

I once grabbed a 2 speed 122 wiper mechanism with the thought of swapping this into my 544 somehow, but there was nothing common between the two, it didn't seem to be reasonably feasible, so I left the PV's 1 speed alone.

Wiper motor issues 444-544 1962

Hi. I'm in the same boat as the first poster. Just bought my '63 544 several months ago and am going through it, too. I am having a really hard time getting the wiper motor out, though, and there is just not a lot of reference material out there on how to do it. I think I've found the nut, but getting a tool up in there at that angle seems impossible in order to get any leverage to make the nut move at all. Anyway, any suggestions you could give would be appreciated, 'cause you've obviously done it successfully. Thanks!

The wiper motor is held to the wiper assembly with a large nut and 2 smaller nuts.

You have to remove the linkage arm on the wiper motor before the large nut can be removed.

IIRC, others have been able to remove the wiper motor without removing the wiper assembly, but I have always removed the whole assembly to service the motor.

I have found it easier to service the motor and it also gives you the opportunity to change the inner wiper post seals.

That's what I did, I removed the whole wiper assembly. Took off the arms, unscrewed those nuts around the wiper shafts, etc.

It's a lot easier to remove 50 years old solidified grease in the gear box and check those parking contacts with the whole thing out.

Wiper motor issues (slowing down speed of wiper's) 444-544 1962

I know this is not about the wiper motor, but it could be of interest to a lot of you with PV's This person (of great repute) makes kit's that slow down the speed of single speed /washer wiper's. Just check him out they may be the thing's for the future.

Peter;

This is an old thread so help may no longer be needed...but I'll add it here anyway...

Dylan;

I can't speak to 544 wiper motor specifics (they are NOT interchangeable with those of a 122), but in general terms, wipers can be sluggish for mechanical reasons (shafts in bushings through cowl bound up...they must be free to turn and preferably well lubed, and motor should itself should not be running slow because of mechanical drag)...or electrical reasons (low voltage at motor, assure good ground at motor and no voltage drops in supply voltage).

The fact that Park Switch is not working suggest that a removal/inspection/refurb is in order anyway. Once you disconnect motor from linkage, that's the time to check for free bushings through cowl.

122 Wiper info might help: http://www.sw-em.com/Windshield%20Wiper%20Systems.htm

Is your car a 6V? My 444 did the same thing before the 12V conversion. Now I run it through a voltage reducer from my 12V battery and it runs better. Returning to the start position is not expected on these old cars.

You'll have to change the dash switch if you want to go 2-speed. But, the motor is very easy to remove. Take the front seats out to make it easier to maneuver under the dash, and it's cake from there. I'm not sure how it compares to the 122 wiper motor removal.

I think I read somewhere that someone used a 240 motor in there.

After it's removed, disassemble , clean and lube. Mine works get after I did this service.

It is said you can use a wiper motor from a 145-245 rear hatch. Not a direct swap and only single speed but apparently it can work.
