Autozone has internally regulated alt! 120-130

Hello All,

I went down to Autozone to puck up a cheap delco alt, and of course the parts guys says- you only own Volvo... I tell him it's true, so sell me the part.
He says warranty is not valid unless it is used for the right application.
He goes on and tells me he sold a 70 amp Bosch alt to a guy with an old Volvo yesterday.

Turns out Autozone has internally regulated alt for a 75 240!

The car had a b20 in it just like mine.... why have I not heard of this before?
This seems like the most straightforward alt upgrade; or am I missing something?

Give me a clue here folks,

    How much money?

A '75 would not have had an internally regulated alternator. I don't think those came along until '78 or so. That said, it's definitely easy to convert the externally regulated B21 alternators to being internally regulated.

But for a '75 with a B20, I'm not sure. Could be, and it would indeed be easy. But likely more expensive than the Delco.

I tend to just tell the counter guy that I have a '80 or whenever chevy whatever, and get that in the system for warranty stuff. Never had a problem. I think as far as Autozone's computer knows, I have about 18 Volvos ranging from 1967 to 1990 (they don't recognize the existence of a pre-1967 Volvo), various Ford trucks ranging from mid '50s through mid '80s, various Jeeps (for Volvo brake light switches), A bunch of mid '60s Jaguars, and a whole mess of various GM products for their alternators. Probably some other oddball stuff too :)

I don't trust their system. It might not recognize the oddity of a '75 240...

      Hello matt b,

I don't trust their system either... I've replaced several batteries over the years- and not once was my purchase saved in the system. My info was... I just so happened that the regional manager had been in the shop a few times when I had bought batteries and he okayed the swap.. otherwise I would have be coming out of pocket.

I originally asked for an alt of an 86 El Camino...

The alt is more expensive than the delco for sure, but it has a lifetime warranty; and I have all the bits to mount it up. I was tempted to go even cheaper for the 55 amp @ under $40. to save on the overall upgrade to pertronix, but I happy enough. The down side is the the lack of a pulley and fan. The must be a generic pulley/kit I can adapt. The link is below.

I like the delco 10si. You want one with the terminals at the 12:00 or 3:00 position. (You can unbolt the back of the alternator and rotate it to move the terminal to a different position. As for which one to order, I lifted this off of another web site:

      10SI, 63 amp, at 3:00 (AC-DELCO # 321-39, Lester #7127-3)

Tell the auto parts counter person that “The alternator is for a 1978, Chevy Camaro, 8cylinder 350engine, with air conditioning.”

      10SI, 63 amp, at 9:00 (AC-DELCO # 321-41, Lester #7127-9)

Tell the auto parts counter person that “The alternator is for a 1979 Buick Regal, 8 cylinder 4.9L (301W) engine, with air conditioning.”

      10SI, 63 amp, at 12:00 (AC-DELCO # 321-43, Lester #7127-12)

Tell the auto parts counter person that “The alternator is for a 1977 Pontiac Grand Prix, 8cylinder 5.7L (350R) engine, with air conditioning and with H.B.L.” (H.B.L. = Heated Back Light–meaning rear window defroster)

I've just been to the local parts store and had all three of these Delco alternators in front of me, side by side with the Motorola that came out of my 145. I know this discussion relates to converting the 122 from generator to alternator, but I thought I'd mention for any other 140 folks who happen upon the thread that the hole through the lower mounting boss on the 10SI is too small a diameter for the bolt used in my '74 145 (it threads directly into the block).

        Thanks onstottc!

The prices range from $44-$69.00. Which is great. I am a fan of Bosch products, as I've never had a bosch part fail on me; aside from an alt in my 740- but it gave me years of trouble free service! I'm going to try this again. Advanced auto also has pertronix kits in stock. This is one of those times when I'm glad I don't have to order from the wesr cosast and hope it gets here soon.

        Thanks again!

Excellent! I saved a screenshot of that one and emailed it to myself. There will come a time when this will come in handy.

        Thanks, onstottc!
