I had a very high idle problem with my '84 last spring. The idle at start up was very high. I didn't have a tach, and the car doesn't have one, so I didn't know the exact speed. I thought it might be the IAC, but I tested it and it was O.K. One day, I was checking the ground wires on the intake when I thought about the coolant temperature sensor. I found the Bosch connector for the coolant temperature sensor was just barely contacting the sensor and the U shaped spring was missing. I didn't have a replacement, so I just pushed the connector on as tightly as I could and cranked the engine. No more high idle!
I learned that sensor can have you pulling your hair out in diagnosing an idle problem. Hope this helps.
