the in tank needing the "never around" second person to turn key

Not only do you not need the second person, you don't even need or even want the key. The pumps can be run from the fuse panel with the engine off.

However, it's probably easier to start the engine, remove the gas cap and listen for the high pitched whine of the tank pump at the filler.
