the perfect reason Not to buy 'Auto Start' for your car. At least walking up and opening the Drivers door mostly scares these Block Warmers away.
Nothing scares them at all whne starting the car from the Living Room window.
Furry critters and fanbelts, don't make for a happy ending for Critter or Engine bay.
Good timing. I just put a real block heater in another vehicle. I should have just paid this Ground Hog with veggies to hang out during the winter. It ends up, the scary part of the Job went easy and what was supposed to be the easy part got scary.

Story of my life. Timing belt replacement on a mid-90's Honda...easy. rotating the tires on the same car...4 spinning lug nuts which turned into two new spindles which turned into two new axles.
Out of curiosity, done a block heater on a B230? now that I am contemplating an alley-side garage door on my garage, I might get to park the 940 out of the weather. As my commute is relatively short and winter is really long, it would be nice to start getting heat before I am half way to work.

Yep, put a block heater in the 1994-940. Somewhat fussy job. The instructions with the kit said to put it in the right-front freeze plug opening, which was at least partly blocked by the PS pump. Anyway that's where I installed it and it has worked fine. The B21/23 blocks get it put in the right-rear freeze plug. Done both my 240's there...easier than the 940 spot.
The B230 blocks have a smaller freeze plug opening (40mm) than the B21/23 (1-3/4 inch) so make sure the parts guys give you the right one.

Have a set of Volvo Block Heater Directions from Volvo for the B230 engine...
VolvoFromHeck gave me a box of Old OEM Volvo block heater stuff.
Have to drop the Exhaust downpipe to get to the correct Freeze plug. I'll pass.
Many companies sell heaters that go in between the Lower Radiator hose.
Zero Start (phillips and Temro) makes many of these heaters for Hotstart and Kats
They sell Dipstick heaters too but I'm not a fan of pulling that out every morning.

Volvo's must appeal to all kinds of wildlife. So far I have had to remove a dead raccoon from the 91 240 (source of a strange smell in the AC) and opened the 945T hood last year to see what at first glance looked like a new silver hose running from the distributor cap in the rear over to the turbo--was actually a snake skin. Living in the woods outside Manassas VA may be a factor. Your mileage may vary.

Interesting photo--but not so funny if you have to deal with the results of wildlife mixing with mechanical parts. I've always been thankful that I was not the mechanic who drew the job of removing the remains of a cat wrapped around a driveshaft. Doug probably still has nightmares from that job 35 years later. Trev, I didn't view your post as anything more than a funny. Of course this little guy (a baby, or as we say, teenager) was looking for some warmth.
Like I said in the other thread, I saw the car moving, as if in a breeze, but there was no wind. I watched for a minute or so to be sure I wasn't hallucinating. Then I approached and listened. Figured it might be a cat or groundhog, so I popped the hood and there he was.
Next challenge was to figure out how to coax him out. I re-thought that and decided that was his job to figure out. While he was working up the plan, I grabbed the camera. Probably added 15 seconds to his imprisonment as he recovered from the flash.
Yes, it is a good thing I noticed him before using the car. I've posted that picture along with some words, over the years -- guess maybe this is the first time you saw it?

Sure.
So you haven't gone green? Here I was thinking, "A groundhog engine warmer and a Spring forecaster. How cool is that! Only downside is the oily fur. (Though admittedly you seem to keep your engines clean and hospitable.)" VFH pointed out an additional downside if one forgets to "disconnect" before one starts the engine. Anyhow, I still suggest a block heater.

Well, then, thanks for throwing in that apology. And the explanation thereof.
Block heater might be a good idea for some in some climates, but it would be just a liability here in the "land of pleasant living."
