Volvo shutting off while driving 900 1992

Hey Guys,

I have a question about and issue I had earlier today with my Volco 940. I was driving home from work on the highway and then suddenly the engine lost power while driving at 70MPH and I had to pull over to the side lane.

When attempting to start the car it turns over but it doesn't start. I checked the belt around the alternator and it seems to be tight, I checked the fuses to see maybe if my fuel pump went bad but the fuse was good.

Any other suggestions on what should be checked? I noticed that when attempting to turn it over it sounded a little different like it was turning faster.

Same 5 answers we give everyone:

    Fuel Pump Relay
Ignition power stage (or coil to power stage connection if Rex/Regina)
    Radio Supression Relay
    Broken T-Belt
    Crank Position Sensor

All of these but the timing belt are a simple parts swap but parts get expensive. We do need to know if you car is turbo or non-turbo and if a non-turbo if it is Bosch LH 2.4 or Rex/Regina fuel injection.

I just brought the car around a year ago at 175K miles, it's a non-turbo regina ignition I believe. I replaced the crankshaft position sensor earlier last year because I had an issue where it wouldn't turn over one morning. I will check for the other four this morning. Is the pump relay in the gas tank in the 940's?

"Is the pump relay in the gas tank in the 940's?" I do not know of any car that would have a relay int he gas tank. In the 940 it is in the tray behind the ashtray with (almost) all the other relays. It will likely be labeled "System Relay" or "Fuel Injection Relay" or similar as it is two relays in one case.

The RSR (Radio Suppression Relay) is a substantial black relay under the hood next to an identical relay (at least on the 740's) that controls the electric fan. The FAQ's will tell you where to find it and since I assume you car has no mechanical fan, you cannot depend on the location using earlier 940 models.

On Regina you with have a squarish coil with the powerstage integrated into it. There are instructions somewhere int he FAQ's about cleaning the connection between the two.

"Is the pump relay in the gas tank in the 940's?"

No, it's in the relay rack just ahead of the fuses as in the pic below.
Access is a bit tight but if needed you can remove the "cubby" above the relays or pull the whole rack out a few inches. More details can be found in the 700/900 FAQ section.

    Dear Alex,

Hope you're well. How many miles? When was timing belt done last (how many miles since replacement)? Is the crank (RPM) sensor factory-original? Are the fuel pumps factory original? Did all the warning lights (in a row, at the bottom of the instrument cluster) come on?

    Pls. post back.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Check for a broken timing belt. Left the oil fill cap and watch the cams turn while attempting to start.
