Suspension? clunk - sounds awful 700 1990

Hey everybody. This is on my 90 740Ti.

I have a front suspension clunk that happens when the car goes up and down. Ka-thunk Ka-thunk. Ka on the up, thunk on the down. I just put on a new tie rod thinking that was it - the old one wasn't even worn. I bought a balljoint locally, but now that I've been bench-pressing the car up and down, I don't think the ball joint is bad.

What are the odds that the shock is thunking around in the tube? They're about six year old boge turbo gas (ironically, not meant for turbo cars) struts.

Driving down the street sounds like I'm about to have a wheel fall off. Every bump or change in height of pavement makes it sound like the wheel is held on by a single half-there nut - in other words, it rattles like heck. Sounds like a piece of gravel in a garbage disposal or a repeated flam for any drummers out there.

I opened the hood and bounced the car - sounds like it's definitely under the car.

Any ideas?

Happy Bricking

Sounds like something is loose in your strut. If the gland nut isn't tight then both spring and the upper strut mount could be moving around. Is there any squeaking?

Can you see the mount move when you push on strut tower? Make sure the mount is okay because if it is really bad the spring/strut assembly could pop up right out of the shock tower and damage your hood or worse.

Probably not the case here, but check your sway bar end links. If the the link or one of it's mini ball joints are broken they might make quite a racket. Simpler solution...:)

    Will
Are the top strut mount nuts tight? How about the ,mmmm, I think its called the gland? nut? the one that tightens down on the shock in the tower ? When I did my struts years ago . I experienced a knocking sound similar to yours. I used a BIG screw driver and a hefty hammer and got a bit more tightened. Are you getting the sound on both sides?

Just had a similar problem on son's 93 245. It may be the same with yours, in that the gland nut has come loose. You will need to rent a set of spring compressors, then use a humongous set of water pump pliers plus a pipe wrench to tighten up the gland nut that holds the strut insert down in its tube. Or maybe some one else could tell us if the insert could be worn down enough not to plunge all the way down in its tube?? I don't know.
Perhaps some suspension guru could inform us.
    thanks,

It's always tempting to beat on the gland nut with hammers, drifts, screw drivers as well as attempt to grip the gland nut with pipe wrenches and other oversized pliers. Gland nuts were never designed for these tools. Get your self a properly sized spanner wrench, the kind that is hinged. Then take that spanner wrench to Lowe's and find an electrical conduit pipe that will slip over the handle of the spanner wrench. With this cheater bar, you'll be amazed at how easily you can move that gland nut with prior prepping with PB-Blaster. Some gland nuts have four slots which is better than those with just two. With the two slot variety, I use a second spanner wrench that has fixed tabs that can fit those two slots. As I rotate with one spanner, I find it easy to switch to the other for additional rotation and then back to the first spanner and so forth.

      Good luck.

      For the fun of Volvos,
      Mike

        Thanks again,Berlis:
The hooked spanner will work on the gland nuts that are on the car now, because they have some notches for the hook to grab, but the ones on the extra sets of springs that I need to rebuild have a flat square end with no notches. I think the only way is to use the BMF set of water pump pliers or a plumbers pipe wrench.

Do you mean I should use the spanner wrench with the pin or with the hook? I think the hooked one will work better, but where does the hook attach? I found some at Sears.
Thanks for the suggestion. I am doing the 'Let us Spray' with PB Blaster daily till Thursday.

Here is a link to a website I have created. The website documents experiences that I have had with a few Volvo repairs including replacing front struts. In that document I have noted the spanner wrench tools with photos and tool part numbers and where I got them. This might help you with your questions.

          Good luck.

Whether you put the two pins in the opposing notches from the top or put the hook on the spanner jaw over the outside edge, not top edge, of one notch does not matter. The trick is to get the capture nut tightened if that is the problem. I would also suggest you look at the top strut nuts to see if they are tightened the same, look the sway bar links to make sure you are not hearing a missing rubber bushing, and just check the springs are properly sitting in the coil end saddles. All will make the thunking sound you hear.
