Are the 90-93 cruise control systems reliable? 200 1992

Hi,

Was wondering if anyone had any experience at all with the 90-93 model year cruise control systems and had any opinions as to their reliability. As searched the archives and saw complaints about the older pre-90 units which I understand are different in that they run off of engine vacuum. I had been thinking about acquiring a 90-93 set up to put in our 92 245. We only go on vacation once a year and it's only about a 4 1/2 hour drive, but man does that drive give me a cramped ass!

Look forward to hearing your opinions,

Travis

You also have to have the proper speedometer. When my speedo stopped working, in the process of finding a good one, I found out that they dont all support cruise. Right now, If I want cruise to work I'll have to get another speedo because the one I installed isnt the right one. Until I made that bonehead mistake, my cruise was working good. Though I hardly used it. Now my cruise is a steady foot. Maybe one day...

I had a 90 for 10 years and when I sold it with 300k the cruise still worked great. Only time it didn't work is when I had a problem with the brake lights. I can't remember exactly what is... but there is a relationship between the operation of the brake lights and the cruise. If the brake lights aren't working your cruise won't work.

Put cruise control in my 91 245 and love it.

Installs easily. Most difficult part is adjusting vacuum release switches on brake and clutch pedals, but that's not really hard at all.

Only complaint is the rarity of the late model cruise stalk...

I feel I should mention that mine doesn't work.

Did you check the usual suspects? i.e. vacuum leak at switches or mis-adjusted switches.
The other culprit could be a leak in the gas pedal diaphragm, crack or hole in the rubber.
          Is the pump running?

Try this test: Hook the pedal diaphragm up directly to the pump (bypassing any vacuum switches) and run power to the pump via some wires from the battery to the pump terminals (bypassing internal car wiring). That should tell you if both the pump and diaphragm are working. You can then backtrack and test air lines, switches, etc... Very doubtful that the brain is dead.

You can also do this test by leaving everything as is but disconnecting the power lead to the pump and running wires to the terminals directly from the battery. If the pump works and the pedal diaphragm starts compressing then the vacuum lines/switches are fine and it is an electrical issue, most likely the stalk.

I haven't tried to fix it. Perhaps, with your suggestions, I'll give it a shot.
            Thank you.

I have 3 1990 Volvo 240's with a combined mileage of 700000 all have cruise and they all work perfectly. I installed cruise control on my sister's 1992 240 and it only took about 1 hour.
