I posted this in a reply to somone elses post but thought I'd do this one also.

I bought a Bosch coil for our '89 wagon a few weeks ago for $58 from IPD.

Reason Im making this post is I was stunned today to see the price jumped at IPD for the exact same coil up to $82!! I looked around various other suppliers and they also have that coil for anywhere from about $80, to one supplier which was about $92!

Is our economy so bad that the price of an ignition coil would jump over $30 in a few weeks? Or is it limited to whatever it is that makes up a Bosch ignition coil?

I am truly stunned. In also glad, and lucky, I got in to get that same coil for $58, a relatively short time ago, which I still feel was a bit high even tho I did go ahead and buy it from IPD.

Thoughts anyone?

This is just speculation, although I have observed this in real life before. A product is made in significant quantity (based on possible product demand)with enough made to fill the supply channel for several years. When supply drops low after several years the product is temporarily reinserted into production, with pricing based on current production costs. This obviously wouldn't apply to products made all the time (MILK?), but a possible NOS coil would fit the profile. It would be interesting to know the production dates of the $54 product vs. the $84 and see if they are typically several years different. Of course, if I had some NOS product I would immediately raise the price to the current level. FWIW

Read your post recently and yes I had noticed recently that the cost on the coil and various other parts had gone up at several places-FCP, eEuroparts, etc. I figure it might have something to do with the cost of shipping increasing.

Anyways I checked the FCPeuro sight as their prices and selection is a lot of times different than FCP Groton oddly. Anyways, I think the coil was around $80 or $90, can't remember.

Curiously I checked Tasca- $48!!!

Here's a few questions concerning coils;

(besides physical size, and connections),Is a coil for a Volvo somehow different than a coil from a Dodge, Ford, Hummer, etc?...

Would an 8 cylinder coil work on a 4 0r 6 cylinder engine?

Would I be mistaken if I was to assume that a coil is basically "a coil"?..in other words; a coils function is universal, with the only variations being capacity and size?

Perhaps these are shallow and/or redundant questions.?

Most of us on here that frequent the BB often are well aware of tiny url. Some of us just don't use it. And that's ok. If you use it that's ok too.

Either way hopefully it helps out someone with saving a little money if they need a coil.

There's a website called autopartsway.ca that has a Bosch coil for less than $54. I deal with these guys a lot, for various makes and models, and have yet to be disappointed with service or quality. Might be worth a try...

Im not looking or a coil myself but LoveMy240Wagon made a post and was concerned his coil might be "bad" so I posted a reply there and looked up coils and found the huge prices then made this post.

BTW, looked at that sight you mentioned and the coil there is exactly what I bought from IPD for $58 several weeks ago.. I wonder if that Bosch coil also says "Made in Brazil"?. Thanks.

HEY-That coil for $51 you mention is in Canada and they do NOT ship to the USA. Their USA based store price is $81.15. Oh well.

I am also stunned and curious.I looked up the Bosch coil on FCP and it is $80 bucks!FCP is usually way cheaper than IPD..
The weird thing is; it's not like a coil is some hi-tech item?
I guess you're probably right about it having something to do with the economy...After fuel prices went up, it costs alot more to ship those Bosch coils from China(?).

I'm curious;what happenned to your original coil?
I've known a couple of people who have experienced coil failure, and I've always wondered what causes a coil to go bad?

I'm sort of glad to hear coils are so expensive because I have 2 spares that I saved from parts cars,and I've almost thrown them away, thinking I would never need them. It justifies me being such a pack rat .

Maybe the price increase has something to do with the price of copper

The coil in my '83 started hissing and spitting at me. Don't remember how it was making the car run, but a new coil certainly improved things -- until that *&^% aftermarket coil just up and quit! But I was checking everything else, and the car sat for months before I did...

Then I noticed later that grease had dripped out of that cheap coil, onto the metal

Nothing "happened" to my original coil. It has been in the '89 wagon for the last 9 years and may even be the original. Sometimes I just like to replace some things just cause they are old, depending what it is.

I kept the original coil "just in case", and now I'm glad I did keep it. Had i known what was going to happen, (the price jump) I might have bought a case or 2 and sold them off Ebay for say $70-$75 each, but, same old story, who knows the future?*

I checked the listing for your car in the catalog of the mail order company I often use---$64 and change for a Bosch coil--free shipping orders over $50. There's probably something to what you found though--even Rock Auto's listing is over $81. -- Dave
