Odometer failure modes? 200 1992

Son o'Gutz suffered an odometer failure today at about 240K. The speedo works fine, but just when I wanted to note a distance I realized the odo had failed. I replaced the cracked gear several years ago, but that gave intermittent symptoms rather than a sudden failure as happened today.

So before I pull the cluster I'm wondering if this is just another gear failure, or if there is another probable cause of failure. Amy thoughts?

If you find the gear intact (and I'd really like to hear if any new gears are breaking) and no old pieces are jamming it, you may have a crack around one of the motor terminal pins like this:

Art, you never cease to impress me with your crisp photography and great advice.

The spousal unit is headed out of town this weekend, so that will give me the free time I need to pull the cluster and search for cracked solder joints.

Safe to assume that re-soldering is the fix?

Thanks to Art I was able to fix my cluster that had this cracked soldering problem. I would never have figured it out as the cracks really are microscopic. Symptoms of this failure are intermittent functioning. Things like big bumps would make the odo. crap out, and a good whack with the palm on the top of the dash would get it going again - sometimes. An easy fix with some solder. Mine's been working flawlessly ever since, and that was about 1.5 years ago no. Thanks Art! BTW, sounds like transit wind might have the same problem there.

That was the exact issue on our 92 245, intermittent operation. The solder job fixed it at 236K miles, it is still fixed. That being said, go ahead and replace the soft gooey gear while you are in there, or you will have to dig back into the cluster to replace the gear in a few years. Consider it preventative maintenance!

I thought my 90 odometer was going to be an easy fix recently. Opened it up and the gears were fine. I moved the numbers around by hand a bit and put it all back together. It started working on and off.

I would guess you have a very fine radial crack in the drive gear which allows its bore
to expand so that it is not tight enough on the shaft.
Or it may just be loose on the shaft from relaxation (creep).
