What is normal oil consumption for a V90 ? S90-V90

Just out of curiosity do these cars use oil. I think this may be fairly common and not worth worrying too much about...

http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=48225

Your thoughts?

Also does anyone know what our engines should be generating for compression (11:1 right)? I think the following is good but need confirmation.

Cylinder PSI
1 220
2 215
3 215
4 210
5 190 (came up to pressure the slowest)
6 220

I think my plugs look good but I do see a puff of smoke in certain driving conditions. Looking for comments. My car has 160K and at least the last 80K has been with regular oil changes and Mobil-1.

Thanks

Will

PS- My car stops on a dime now....

Your plugs look OK as far as deposits go. Maybe it's the camera angle but the gap looks way too wide on the left one. I have had good results with the OE Volvo triple electrode plugs...about $22 for a set of six from FCP Groton.

My S90 has 227,000km (141k mi). I occasionally see a slight puff of smoke under certain conditions, too, but it is usually only down 1 litre at oil change time. For me, that's every ~12,000km (7500mi) using Mobil-1, 5W30. I have had new cars use more than that, and still be within the "normal" range according to numerous mechanics.

The industry-accepted standard for oil "consumption" is one quart for every oil-change interval and different brands say different things but that is the 'not to worry' range. good luck. BTW, can you tell me how to send pictures? I have a new thread right above yours. Thanks and good luck.

My S90 has 388,000km and about a year ago I used to add 1L every 1000km. I started using Lucas 1L with each oil change for about 4-5 oil changes, each time putting 1L with an oil change. After that I stopped using it and now I go through 1-1.5L/7000km which I think is normal. I drive all highway and change my oil every 7000km. These engines develop sludge issues if the oil isnt replaced very often. Make sure to replace your oil separator also, its a pain but needs to be done!!

What's the oil separator? Are you talking about the oil filter?

My car uses about 1.5 quarts between changes (5000k mile interval).

The oil separator is part of your pollution control system. Also called the breather box. It traps sludge (and other gunk) from the pollution control system and prevents it from reentering the engine.

Are you familiar with the famous Volvo flame trap? I'm not sure what the set-up is on the 6 cylinder engines, but on the 4 cylinder engines the flame trap is mounted above the oil separator. They are connected by a hose. The separator will fill up with sludge etc. on cars with high mileage. This will keep the engine from breathing correctly causing high crankcase pressure which can result in leaking engine seals. Possibly including the rear main seal.

BTW - Please disregard the above paragraph if you are already using synthetic motor oil as synthetic doesn't leave sludge or other deposits...:)

Not a filter. The oil separator is part of the crankcase ventilation (PCV) system and separates the liquid droplets of crankcase oil mist so that only the fumes/vapour get into the engine intake. If (more realistically, when) it gets clogged, the crankcase gets pressured up and oil seals start leaking. If you have short trips, cool weather, conventional oil with extended change intervals, the separator will get clogged more quickly.

If you have a lot of oil staining around the filler cap, it suggests the PCV system is not fuuntioning properly.

1.5 qts in 5k mi is within reason for a high mileage engine.

            Thanks for all the advice.

We did a scouting for food event with the car and I drove for 30 min with the gate up really slowly got pretty good puffs of smoke out the back after a while each time I hit the gas. The car has not done it since so it might have been a sticky injector or something but that is what really got me looking into this.

I think I am near that 1.5 -2 qt in 5K miles ( I think) and I have done the flame trap. Based on good compression numbers and normal looking plugs I think I may have worn valve guides. May just put up with it for now and maybe do the head this summer if I keep the car. I really like the size of the V90 a lot but new cars are getting more appealing to me lately.
