1993 940 No start (it appears to be a fuel related problem) 900 1993

I have a 1993 940 that has trouble starting in the morning. Often in takes about 10 to 15 cranks before it starts. At first there is no sign of firing and then it will occasionally fire on one cylinder. Eventually it fires on two cylinders and then it will runs great and its will start again for the the remainder of the day.

Thus far, I have changed the fuel pump relay, gas cap, and the fuel regulator without any improvement. I suppose my next step is to change the fuel injector relay. I would appreciate any suggestions.

PS. The EGR light has been on for many years. The codes have always indicated a bad engine coolent sensor. I don't believe it is the problem.

Thanks, in advance,

Bob Hinton

    Another brainstorm....

It sort of sounds as though the fuel is running back to the tank at night, leaving an air pocket in the injector rail. I don't know if the pumps used on the LH system (turbo) incorporate a check valve or not.

Next time you go to start it first thing in the morning, try turning the key on to the ignition position (hearing the pump priming for a couple seconds) and then switching the key back to the off position. Do this several times, THEN crank the starter and see if you get any different results.

1993 940 No start (it appears to be a fuel related problem) TURBO car 900 1993

    Hi Bob,

I went back thru your posts to learn that this 940 is a Turbo, which has some differences from the NA version. One is the RSrelay. On the Turbo, the RSrelay powers the coil as well as the injectors. I think you replaced it once but I would pull the RSR plug and jumper/bridge the 2 terminal sockets for the fatter wires and see if that helps.

Have you tried clearing the codes and rechecking? See the FAQ for how to do this.
