Need Help with Front Coil Spring Information - Tears without Measure 200 1977

Hi,

I just completely refit my front end with new control arms, struts, bushings, inner and outer tie rods, and wheel bearings.

This vehicle is a 1977 264 GL. I installed a lighter B23F instead of the heavy B27 six cylinder.

After adjusting the strut all the way inboard, the camber is still positive. The front end rides pretty high from the wheels which I actually like, because the suspension travel is enhanced.

The camber is out of spec, however. I see that the 240 Turbo models had different springs then the other models. Also, the six cylinder had alternate parts.

What are the part numbers and the differences between the options? I’d like a stiff spring, but I cannot align the hub correctly without camber plates at this ride height.

    Failed Alignment 200 1977

    Hello,

Had the 1977 aligned at the dealership today. The camber was out of spec, just as I expected.

1.1 degrees positive and 0.9 degrees positive.

Guess I should have changed the springs first! Boo!

      I don't want to say...(you know the rest) ;-) 200 1977

"Guess I should have changed the springs first! Boo!"

Somebody suggested that back on Thu Feb 7 17:59 EST 2008, when seeing your car photo (copy below) and said:

"Another item for your list would be the front springs. Intended to carry the heavier V-6, they are lifting the front end too high, with the lighter B23 installed. The lift is apparent in the picture."

I can't answer your technical question regarding the different springs--while I've taken many measurements of rear springs 140/240--I've never done the same with 240/260 fronts. But I can tell you what worked for me when I rolled my V8 conversion (alumuinum 215 Oldsmobile-lighter than the B21-23- into a '76 265) out of the garage and found my headlights in the trees. As a "temporary" measure we did an old hot rod lowering trick--heating a stretch of the coil to cherry red and bouncing on the fender. We did each side till it looked "right". The drop in the spring is probably over 2". While the car was in the shop getting the V8 I had replaced the strut inserts with new KYB Gas-adjusts so I wasn't keen on taking it all apart right away to install 240 springs. Having the 260/diesel spring rate made for a much firmer ride with the lighter V8 and with doubled up 260 sway bars it had almost no lean driving on the road. In the end the springs never got changed--more than 150K miles later they're still on the car. -- Dave

Tears aside, how are you measuring camber. And to what specs? (NMI) 200 1977

      Lucid,

I stand fifty feet away and look at it. The slant is obvious. I should take a picture... I messed with a level but found it useless because it interfered with the tire.

I'm assuming you have rolled the car back and forth about ten feet to allow the tire scrub to work out, after having lowered it to the ground?
Then a few good bounces and it should be fine - if not it's the springs.

I wish I could help but that is the one area in which I am completely uninformed. I am certain one of the heavy-weight brains from BB will come to the rescue, although it sounds like you know enough to do it solo.

      Euroman,

I don’t understand part of your comment. What do you mean by, "know enough to do it solo"? I need information on coil springs.
