1983 240 Turbo smog check readings with a bad Catalytic converter 200 1983

Hi everyone. I need your knowledge. What specific readings on the smog check diagnosis would be out of spec if the catalytic converter was not working properly? I specifically am asking which readings, %CO2, %O2, HC (PPM), CO% or NO (PPM) go out of spec when the catalytic converter fails?

thanks all.

by the way, my car has a newly rebuilt engine. I failed smog test. With high HC (PPM), 154 measured vs, max allowable 133 for 15 mph and 151 vs 105 for 25 mph test, and I also failed CO% test, of 8.93 measured vs 0.96 for 15 mph and 9.03 vs, 0.76 allowable for 25 mph test. all other tests passed.

I just replaced the cat with a new one and the oxygen sensor. Timing is spot on at 12 degrees btc. Car runs great now, but I am concerned. I adjusted the air/fuel mixture per the bently manual for just allowing fuel to flow from distribution. exhaust doesn't smell rich. and my new timing light also says it measures dwell angle. Well for 4 cylinder cars, it says 59 degrees and nothing I did changed that angle. I believe that dwell measurements isn't something the device does well.

    any help would be appreciated.

I'm trying to avoid taking it to my dealer for adjustments when I should be able to adjust it myself.

    Thanks,

      Hello,

The quality of the fuel distribution pattern along with adequate compression is essential for complete burning of the air/fuel charge during the power stroke.

I really would look at the fuel injectors. If they are streaming instead of spraying, then the charge will not burn completely.
