My 1991 volvo 740 has a list of symptoms that all happened at once: While driving, the radio, air conditioner & blinkers all stopped working while the speedometer and tachometer went wacky.(and possibly brake lights & headlights might also stop working but I'm unsure since it happened during daylight hrs both times) The engine doesn't seem to miss a beat during this and after continuing driving a couple miles it goes back to normal & everything works. This has happened twice now exactly the same both times. I found the answer on your site to the problem of speedo , tach and fuel gauge(my fuel gauge also stopped working recently) being related to the instrument cluster needing repair but I haven't been able to find any information that include ALL of my symptoms. Is it possible that the radio, air conditioner and blinker malfunction are also related to a problem with the instrument cluster?

    Clean ALL the grounds on the inner front fenders.

    Replacing the ignition switch fixed the problems. Also did some re-soldering and once again my fuel gauge is working.

    The electrical portion of the ignition could cause these symptoms. Next time it happens try jiggling the key back and forth. If everything comes back, replace the switch.

      Thanks guys, very informative answers. I have a new ignition switch and plan on starting there. Might be a few weeks before I can get it done but I will post my results then. I plan on looking everything over close while I'm there and re-solder where needed. Thanks again, Pat

    Trace these circuits using a wiring diagram to try to find any common points. You may have some corroded grounds or failures inside the main relay panel connections.
