Completely Rebuilding A/C System - How to Test Compressor?

I know very little about the a/c system, but I've been reading the FAQs and doing some online research, and yesterday I took most of the a/c components out of my 1993 940 turbo, in preparation for a complete rebuild of the system.

Here's the story: A few years ago, I noticed that the hose from the evaporator to the compressor had blown apart at the fitting. I removed it and took off the belt. I drove the car for a couple of years with the compressor disconnected, and the a/c system 'open' . (Bad idea, I now know...)

When I looked at the Orifice Tube yesterday, it was clogged with some black stuff. Maybe this caused the hose to "pop"?

The compressor pulley spins freely, so is there any chance the compressor is still good? And how do I test that?
