Recently the headlights on our 93 240 wagon don't always want to work. The parking lights come on like they should, but the headlights don't always come on. Sometimes they do, sometimes they don't. The brights work like they should. Is this a possible headlight switch failure???

check the high/low beam relay and its socket next to the battery.

It was a bad connection. Lights are working now

Check the headlight relay, not sure exactly where it is on a 93 model under the drivers left foot on my 86 model. They are famous for burning up contacts and leaving you with nothing but high beams if you pull back on the stalk that is.

At least that is what left me in the dark on my 86 model. Now have the added four relays under the hood and that removes the load off the headlight relay.

On a '93 the relay will be in the center console.

It's what turns the headlights on and off with the key.

In my case, it still clicked when the headlight switch was turned on and the key turned on and off, but it had lost connectivity on the wire that carried power to the switchable hi/lo relay under the hood.

Symptoms of the main relay are that the pull-back to flash brights still works, and the parking lights work, but neither hi or low works (although the relay will flash the brights, neither will stay on with out the turn signal switch pulled back).

The brights do stay on when you pull on the lever just like they're supposed to. Does this mean that it's probably not the headlight relay then?

There are two relays in the circuit the big metal can under the hood near the battery and on inside the car one that turns the lights on an off with the key position.

Since the brights staying on when you pull the leaver back points you to the one inside the car in the center console. If it's bad you will see it, mine was all sorts of burned up. It's was the connector to the relay not the relay itself that failed on my 86.

I pulled the console off today and got to the relay. The connector doesn't look burnt at all. I clicked the switch on and off a couple of times and I could feel the relay clicking pretty firmly in my hand, I replaced with a relay that I had in the garage, and it does the same thing. Which wire(s) should be getting 12V?

I don't think this is really a good thing, it would seem I have a loose wire somewhere.
