ECU suitability '88 B230FT 700 1988

Well, Robert, thanks for your honesty in the matter. I'm not quite ready to chuck my growing piles of manuals and other reference materials as yet, so I'll go on looking. I'm quickly being driven to check the number of the ECU currently in my vehicle, especially in view of the following notes, found on another Volvo forum; what's your take on this?:

"LH2.2

740 Saloon (744) - 2.3 Turbo 08.86-07.89 156HP B230FT
740 Estate (745) - 2.3 Turbo 08.86-07.89 156HP B230FT
760 Saloon (704, 764) - 2.3 Turbo 01.88-07.89 162HP B230FT

LH2.2 (Fuel ECU):

0 280 000 541
(Volvo p/n: 1367487)

0 280 000 591
0 986 261 759
(Volvo p/n: 3531107, 5003765)"

"For LH2.2:

The 541 and 591 ECU are the same but with two differences. The 591 has newer (better) components that makes it more durable and stable. The 591 also has a removable chip. Other than that the 541 and 591 doesn´t differ in function or driveability. With the mod-kit that is included in the 541 chip package the 541 becomes a 591."

Actually, I'm finding more info on this topic as I go, and of particular interest is the stuff on chipping, which is of no interest to me, Except that the writers are especially precise in their references to the specific ECUs involved.

I'll close this thread soon with an update on what's currently working for me. If it seems appropriate, perhaps I'll swap the new unit in, just to see if it'll allow the machine to start and run.

Regards,

Garth.
