IRS gear case drain plug? 900 1997

I don't see the answer to my basic question in the FAQs. Does a 1997 960/S90 have a drain plug for the independent rear suspension gear case? I don't see an obvious one?

IRS gear case drain plug? 900 1997

    Dear DougC,

May this find you well. I hope your New Year has started well, and improves steadily.

As I do not own and so work on 960s, I base my comments on the diagrams and parts lists shown in Volvo VADIS, the now-superseded dealer parts/service database. The Board's 960/S90/V90 experts will surely follow-up.

The diagram of the "Split Rear Axle", Type 1065 shows a "plug". It is on the face of the gear case, where the driveshaft connects, on the driver's side of the gear case. This plug is Part #30713275 (the old part number was 3549308). This diagram also shows a bottle of "rear axle oil" (0.5 liter; Part #1161329).

The diagram does not show where the oil is to go, or how much oil is required.

    I hope this helps.

    Yours faithfully,

    Spook

Thank you, Spook. I did see the plug on the front of the gear case near where the driveshaft attaches. It was on the driver's side of the front of the case. That plug on my car appears to be the fill plug. There may be a drain plug on the back side. If there is, it's harder to find than on my 240s. There is a bolt at the bottom of the back side of the gear case that looks like it serves a structural purpose, at least at first glance. I'm thinking it might also serve as the drain plug. I ran out of time and had to take the car down off the jack stands, so I can't check it out again right now. I'm hoping someone will verify my hunch before I put it back up on the stands to drain and fill the gear case.

        Dear DougC,

May this find you well. You're welcome. The plug, to which I referred, is on the front of the gear case, i.e., the side that faces the engine. I recall reading posts, in which it was stated, that one of the bolts, which secures the gear case cover, can be used to drain the oil.

        Yours faithfully,

        Spook
