speedometer and tachometer both don't work but cruise control and odometer do... 700 1991

Trying to get my 91 740 dialed in.

I replaced the capacitors per FAQ and still no fix. I test swapped a good cluster from my 2nd Volvo, 92 740 and every worked.

The Cruise and odometer have always worked.

Any other thoughts?

Rob in Cali

Were there other capacitors not listed in the FAQ? If so, let me know the ratings and models so I can add them to the list.

no, you got them all. Radio shack just did not have the 6.8 microF.

Maybe you should add the big 220microF on the corner of the board to your list

        Thanks

That's the big orange one in the FAQ photo, right? Do you have a voltage rating and Mouser or Digikey parts number for this one?
Again, many thanks to you for your excellent notes, all of which are now in the FAQ.

            yes, that is the one.

Sorry, I don't rememebr the voltage - at work now

It turns out I got a 95 940 speedo from a junk yard thinking it would swap - but no. I gutted the 95 for the matching size capacitors and put them into the broken one.

    Fixed It!

Did all the capacitors, I mean all. Plus you need to retrace the circuit board paths due to the acid from the leaking capacitors.

This was hard because it was really hard to remap the board without knowing the original path. Turned out I needed to bridge a wire from one IC leg to a capacitor point.

The only way I knew the way was by comparing it to a good board.

Also, the tach needed a new 6.8 micro F capacitor. Fixed it!

One thing I learned is a good DMM meter can check the capacitor reading. GO THRU EACH ONE AND TEST THEM! A LEAK IS NOT THE ONLY SIGN.

Highly recommend taking the speedo apart by turning the dial counter clockwise and popping it of. Reset it with the needle at the k in km/hr at full clockwise spin. Take the odometer motor off and zip tying it to the board so it doesn't flop around. Just unsolder the 2 service light switch wires.
    Very easy.

Now my speedo and tach work!

      While we're on this topic 700 1991

I have a quick couple of questions, now that this topic is at the forefront. Regarding taking the speedo out, is there a special way to remove the gauge needle? I wonder about breaking it. On my first car i was experimenting (this was on a chevette) with gauges, and broke several speedos by trying to pull the needle off. Was frustrating at the time, and I don't want to go through that again. So if there's a trick to it, I'd appreciate your sharing it!

Secondly, I want to add a Volvo voltmeter (from a early 80's 242). I have an A-pillar gauge pod to put it in, so that's no problem. I know they're not the greatest gauges in terms of accuracy, but I like that it's Volvo, and it was cheap. Anyway, I'm wondering if I can just solder the leads onto the back of the instrument panel board somewhere, to hook it up. Do you know offhand of two terminals on there that have the full potential-difference between them?

Actually thinking about it, I guess I could attach the negative lead directly to ground, and then just need to attach the +12V to something. What do you think?

      Thanks.

As a learned from another post (forget the username name for giving credit):

        Steps:

        - Rotate the needle to full stop. You will see the needle stops about over the km on the km/hr stamp. Rememeber this to reset the needle.

        - release the needle so it goes back to 0 and rests on the stop pin.

        - (this is the part that is scary). Left up the end of the needle over the stop pin so that it clears the pin while rotating the needle counter CW.

        - Keep going Counter CW until the needle finds its internal stop. Gentle keep going to release the needle base grip on the speedo center mast pin.

        - once it releases, gently pull the needle straight off while turning it counterCW

        - you many need to go over the stop pin again. Just lift the needle over it again.

        - the stop pin is fragile, so be careful

        - to put it back on, slightly reinstall the needle on the speedo mast pin (enough for a gentle fit). Rotate needle clockwise until the needle stops over the km mark (remember) - and then push the needle base down on the center mast pin to keep it in place during final use.

        - try not to touch the gauge surface. it doesn't like greasy hands

I have no comment/experience on the voltage gauge - sorry. It would be nice to have one though. My 86 745T has one (but that is my X wifes now!)

I really don't know why ...but I did have a similar issue on my 94 940.

Mine was ABS light on, then a few days later no speedo. With no speedo, NO cruise on mine tho.

Found broken wire on the sensor on rear end - took care of speedo and light (after cleaning all ABS parts at front wheels).
