I wondered if anyone had been successful with connecting to the stock radio through the equalizer port to add an axillary input ( CD or MP3 player) to one of the stock AM/FM/Cassette radio (Mine is a Model 6141)
I want to attempt this myself. I have seen a few efforts but I wasn't sure if any were successful..

Thanks

Hi Dan,

I don't know about the 6141, but it was easy to do on the CR-712's we have in our 240's. The part numbers are Digi-Key, and the white cable is shielded cable from some USB toy. The 8-pin DIN plug has standard numbering; 1=Left out, 2=Ground, 3=Left in, 4=Right out, 5=Right in. The 3.5mm audio plug is standard; Tip=Left, Ring=Right, and Sleeve=Ground.

Price from Digikey 700 1990

I ordered two of everything Art listed from Digikey for $18.37 includes shipping and tax. I plan on modifying two bricks. The DIN plug needs a dash to find it in a digikey search, CP-1380-ND.

So it is as simple as it looks?..

Do you get volume control off the radio or only through the MP3 player?

I am planning to do the addition in a factory equalizer and hoping to find the plug in my "collection." it will be an almost free addition to an excellent car.

Very simple and clean install, very nice.

Hi Dan,

The input at the equalizer jack is before the volume control, so yes you have control in both places. I also thought I'd find the plug in my junk collection, but none were 8-pin; had to order it. But we love our stock radios, so I've made a few of these already. And the first wasn't so clean cut because I insisted on charging the ipod.

Art,

Kudos again for being such an amazing source of information. Did you have to solder both ends of the cable? Did you drill a small hole through the faceplate? How does the jack input secure to the faceplate.

I may being doing this shortly.

Thanks Paul,

The jack comes with a knurled nut, but I didn't get a picture with that in it.

Art,

I am building one of these cables. I ordered the parts so far and awaiting them in the mail. Looks like in your picture you doubled up some of the wiring on the pins correct? Was this just for redundancy, cleaner signal, and using up the extra wires from your usb cable? You did not use the left-out and right-out pins on the equalizer connector correct?

Thank you for your write up, it is very useful.

What a strange chance I'd look at this 2009 thread. In the 700 forum. OK, I did, so I see what you are talking about.

The red background I chose was bad for the red wire. The photo doesn't show the white wire because it is hidden behind the ground. I think I meant the photo for concept, and not wiring instruction, but once you get your parts you'll see what you need to do. Five wires, five terminals, as regards the 1/8" stereo jack. Somewhere else I've posted the pinouts on the eq plug, I'm certain. Let me know if you don't find them. I probably posted in the 200 forum because I have no 7/9 cars.

A marine biologist developed a race of genetically engineered
dolphins that could live forever if they were fed a steady diet of
seagulls. One day, his supply of the birds ran out so he had to go out and trap some more. On the way back, he spied two lions asleep on the road.

Afraid to wake them, he gingerly stepped over them. Immediately, he was arrested and charged with...transporting gulls across sedate lions for immortal porpoises.

I liked this thread for the great pictures and write-up you posted, so figured I'd keep it going for other's benefit.

I think I figured it out though... the current EQ plug has the left-in --> left-out connected and right-in --> right-out connected. It looks like you did the same to connect them on the 1/8" jack correct? (I was confused why you had 5 wires going to 3 contacts on the 1/8" jack).

"(I was confused why you had 5 wires going to 3 contacts on the 1/8" jack). "

I didn't. The jack has 5 terminals. It incorporates a switch to do the function of the jumper plug when you've not got your ipod connected to it.

Awesome, thanks!. This clears everything up. Just couldn't see all 5 contacts in the picture.

I made the cable today and it works great! I used a multi-meter to figure out how to wire the connectors. Now I see how the audio jack also works as a switch. Pretty neat. I was having trouble getting the solder to stick to the terminals but some flux really helped... which I should have just used in the first place.

Off to radio shack for me, maybe they still have this kind of stuff...

I will take pictures once I check the condition of the equalizer now.

Thank you for the help!

Check online first. Radio shack has the switching stereo jack, I'm sure, but may have to special order the DIN plug for your equalizer jack if they have it at all.

I figured if I added the EQ I would get the plug and a factory looking place to put the input.

Sometimes I think it is good to keep local businesses afloat, not sure about this time as the parts section was a mess, everything was "in" drawers.. but that was it.

I will try to upload a picture of it finished in the car and one of the little slot that exists on the side of the sliders where I was able to stick the jack. I have more pictures if anyone needs them for their own use.

Thank you for your help and good luck to those who do the addition, it is amazing what the factory amp can do with a clean signal! Now I have to upgrade the speakers, these 20 year old rattlers don't do the rest justice.
