Driver's door hinge spring failure? Door won't stay open if on even a slight grade 200

Sorry for a dumb question, but I did a search here on this topic, but didn't get the answers I'm seeking. None of the 240 manuals (Haynes, Chilton, or Bentley) cover this at all.

The driver's door on my 1990 245 has lost all its ability to remain open. It no longer resists gravity if parked on even a slight grade, or even a mild breeze.

Is this simply caused by a spring that has lost its springy-ness from 20 years of use?

Can I replace the spring with a junk yard spring (probably from a rear passenger door, with less wear on the spring)?

...or is something else going on?

Driver's door hinge spring failure? Door won't stay open if on even a slight grade 200

    Hello Bob,
I recently replaced the hinge on my driver door.
It was my bottom hinge, it has two bolts on the
door and two onto the frame that you can have
access too if you remove two screws that hold the
fuse holder in place. The bolts are behind the
fuses. I was lucky to find a white model at the
pull and pay that matched my car.
It is not such a difficult job once you get into it.

    Good luck,
    Joseph in New Mexico

I have done the same. In my case, the spring was fractured. Here's some more detail that comes to mind. Carefully mark the positions of BOTH hinges, upper and lower, against the door and the frame. With one hinge removed, be certain that the driver's door weight is supported. I used blocks of 2x4's and others to shim the correct height. I might also have used a bottle jack to fine-tune. I also had to loosen bolts on the upper hinge. This helped me finagle the lower hinge in place between the door and the frame. This is why you need to mark positions of both upper and former lower hinge. This will get you in the ballpark for final positioning of the door.
