Master Brake Cylinder Question 200 1985

I thought I found my brake problem from my post(front caliper problems) but the bleeder I found a little loose after bleeding wasn't it but it didn't help.I still have the outer pads not working even with some rust on the disc's(from rain 4 days ago) after rebleeding the system again. So now my question is can the master cylinder be bad without external leaking? I used the power bleeder for bleeding,so I did get a good stream of fluid.Would I have found a problem If I bled the breaks the old way of pumping the pedal. The brakes work but when applying the brakes the feeling of bumping/shuddering is felt.I don't think the disc's are worped but I guess they could be.I just don't have the $$$ to through at it but it seems hard to figure out. Thanks for any help.Charlie

Master Brake Cylinder Question 200 1985

    Howdy Charlie,

Yes, a master cylinder can fail with no leaks to the outside world.

But, in your case, where you have good pressure on the inside of the caliper and no pressure on the outside of the caliper, look at the caliper. The two halves of the caliper have alignment punch marks that must match or the fluid passage to the outside of the caliper will be blocked; no pressure on the outside.

See this post and associated links:

    Let us know the outcome.

Master Brake Cylinder Question 200 1985

HI,i went through that 5 yrs. ago when I got the calipers from NAPA and had one that was mismatched but thats a hole different story. I don't know why the two front calipers are doing that just on the outside.

Time to fess Up 200 1985

I pulled the front pads out again and the light bulb came on. When I 1st pulled the pads an cleaned all the parts with a small wire brush and reinstalled the pads I put the inside pad on the outside and the outside on the inside and then I read a post saying not to do that.Well now don't I feel stupid! But I also found that my wheel bearings where a little loose so I tightened them and after a test ride every thing is good. The reason I thought the outer pistons where not working was some of the rust from a resent rain was still on the disc's.Pads do wear differently and I guess that was what I was looking at.Well I guess the only good that came out of this was it just cost me time and not $$$$$. Thanks,Charlie

In your first post you wrote, "I still have the outer pads not working even with some rust on the disc's(from rain 4 days ago) after rebleeding the system again"

I think most of us would have assumed that you had pressed the pistons into the calipers when removing/installing the pads and discovered that they had not pushed back out when the pedal was applied.

Anyhow, pushing the pistons in and checking for their return is common practice and helps to detect seized/seizing pistons.
