A Couple of 245 Painting Questions 200

We're getting ready to paint an '88 245 and are uncertain as to what to do about the rear cargo area side glass outside trim and the tailgate window trim.

Is the outside trim removable on these two windows? It would make painting easier if the trim could be removed instead of having to tape the trim beforehand. I'm aware that the side glass can be removed, but if one does so, what are the pitfalls to watch out for? Does one reuse the seal?

Also, is there are secret to getting paint down into the cowl when a repaint is done? We are painting the car back to its original color after a really awful repaint job and this will include paintind down in the cowl.

Any tips?

Thanks.

I don't have much info for you since my car is a 2 door. I do know the trim on the rear window is just pressed into a groove in the rubber window seal. It can be carefully pried out. I dont know about the wagon side windows. The trim along the bottom of the door windows is just pressed onto a straight edge and can be pried up and off. It is the same procedure I used to change the window scraper rubber.

I have painted inside the cowl. There is no access to the area. Perhaps a small sand blaster could spray between the slits. There is no way to get to any rust on the underside of the grill. I just washed by spraying at the car wash as best I could. I then used spray paint to spray between the slits. I used a nozzel and plastic tube from a WD40 can.

For the rear most window, the trim will pop off but most likely the plastic clips that hold it in place will shatter.

For painting the cowl vents, you need to shoot with the gun angled from one side and then the other making multiple passes. This approach will result in even coverage for the metal that is vertical around the slats.
