Help running down a miss 200 1987

I'm trying to trace down a miss on my 87 240. It doesn't "appear" to be electrical, but I am open to any suggestions. I havn't had a miss in the 16,000 miles I've put on the car, not even a hiccup. (204,000 miles)

Car starts fine and instantly.
idles fine, (maybe just a hair low)
Upon acceleration I get a hiccup, usually one in every gear. Out on the highway I get a hiccup every few minutes, usually under slight acceleration.

I cleaned the throttle body.
Duct taped a few pin holes in the duct work from AMM to throttle. New air filter
PVC (breather, flame trap etc) spotless--all new
Checked for vac leaks. - seems fine
Checked for bad grounds. - seems fine

Could you tell me what would be a logical sequence to check:

Fuel filter (from the looks of it, this boy is original. I had one local shop look at it and they said they wouldn't change it. too scarey looking they said. I have changed a B230 fuel filter before. That's why I took it to the shop and tried to throw money at them. Should I bite the bullet and do this first?

Fuel pressure regulator - I have a new one in a box I bought on ebay. (I don't smell gas under the hood._

AMM - What would be the best way to eliminate AMM as the culprit?

Fuel Pumps - they seem to be fine, no odd noise.

Other?

Where should I start? I've spent 2 weeks reading the archievs on issues like this. Any help you could give me would be appreciated......

Wiglaf

UPDATE Help running down a miss 200 1987

Thanks to all who helped me with this. I backed off 20 paces and began throwing parts at the car. I amassed a goodly selection of parts in preparation, but I didn't use them all.

It turned out to be a failing AMM. I picked up a used one on ebay ($25.01)last week. When I plugged it in, all my problems were solved.

A couple of interesting things happened in this 2 week process:

    1) I noticed a leak in my breather box and replaced it (the whole system). All the oil I had been leaking for a year was from this leak, not from a cam seal like I thought. I am leak freakin free (knock on wood)

    2) My large clock started working. It has shown 12:00 for all the time I've had it. (I cleaned all the fuses.)

I started working a little before 5 a.m. yesterday and wrapped up a little after 5 p.m. All day working on a 240---it doesn't get any better than that!

Thanks again for all the advice. Without the Brickboard, I would have thrown a sledge hammer through the windshield a long time ago.

    Wiglaf

A known good AMM may not be easily had. What I did is remove the amm (I think it's covered in the FAQs, don't do it while car is running). If car runs the same without it as with it, then the amm is usually the culprit. That was the case with my 88 240

Check and make sure the injector clips are clean. The back two can get corroded. Sometimes just pulling them off a on cleans tarnish off of the pins. Some old style T.V. tuner cleaner protects these connections for me.

I had another suggestion. Ignition system.

Ohm meter the wires and the rotor button of the distributor. The rotor button should ohm out about the same as the wires.

I have recently found one that was in the meg. ohm range. Almost considered a open circuit. The engine still ran fine except for a occasional miss that made the computer bump the idle up and down.

I get approx. 6 kilo ohms depending on make of wires. I pull the cap and wires as a unit and ohm from the inside out to the ends. If the pins in the cap are corroded some you can scrap them off or just replace the cap. You always get some blue stuff no matter how old.

I had an annoying miss in my 240 that turned out to be a failing AMM. The best way to test is to swap in a known good one.

I would do a complete Tune up before winter & replace that fuel filter. A diry or clogged fuel filter put more strain on you fuel pumps as well. I would even change the on in the tank. I would bet it has never been changed. Do the basic thing first go from there.
