eBay 240 wagon went for huge money! 200

I must say I never guessed the white '93 245 on eBay would have gone for $9,300! Wow, some folks out there really liked that car! It is a nice one from the pics (hope it is as nice in reality), comments? ebay 270266951011

I think it was a shill bid, not uncommon on ebay 200

alaskarog supposedly bought a 2004 VW Jetta for $9500, maybe from the same seller with a different ebay ID, not too long ago. Hilarious, at least. alaskarog likes to buy old $9000 cars.

Low mileage, 5 speed, rust free wagons are ridiculously priced here in FL. I have turned down $6K twice for mine. I may sell it, but don't really know the value. They go VERY high here. I have seen several go for $8K+

It does look very nice. The photographer knew to shoot down the sides to show the surprising lack of door dings, and similarly across the hood. Makes me ashamed of all the door dings on my white '91.

If the miles are true, I would have bid $5k for a car this clean, but not $9k. That owner got paid well for keeping it nice.

eBay 240 wagon went for huge money! 200

No kidding! I've been watching them and that's why I decided to start dabbling in the wagons (and sedans too) on the side on ebay.We have a family car dealership, but our inventory is not specialized..but rather mostly domestic and in an area attracting primarily tradesmen and well, good ol boys.. I noticed the money the volvos were bringing for a while now...and how it surged even more with the gas crunch.people are turning to these iconic classics and getting 30 mpg to boot to haul around their brood now instead of the suburbans! I've found the trifecta is: AC,5spd, wagon w 3rd seat. A neighboring dealer picked up the most pristine, babied (as they usually are) 5 spd wgn trade from a toyota dlr for 600.00...turned around and sold it for 5,200. Another gota wgn for 250 did a little routine work, sold it for 3900. I'm having similar luck but not quite to that extent. Anything over 8000 is unbelievable.I gotta check it out.people baby these cars, and the volvo buyer, knowing their reputation, care not about unknown miles, thrice broken odometers, and screwy titles. In the business...I've never really seen anything quite like it.even the honda fanatics are less attached to their cars, and tend to neglect routine maint.more often than the volvo owner. I haven't even tried to convert anyone though..you're either fully a volvo person or you think "why do people want these slow, boxy station wagons. One fellow enthusiast said she knew she'd finally acheived something wonderful when her teenage kids hide their faces as she drives them to school in her beloved 88 240 wgn w 3ook miles. Cute!

Where do you find these 240 wagons? 200

Where do you guys find clean 240 wagons? I am in west Mississippi, and every one I have seen advertised in MS, AL, TN, LA are tired and neglected. They oozed way down to the bottom dwellers a long time ago.

Where do you find these 240 wagons? 200

In eastern PA you can pick one up for about $400 to $1200 depending on the situation. There's a lot of faithfull one owner RWD Volvo owners in the area starting to sell their brick localy because mostly the suspension and interior parts are worn out.
        2 weeks ago I ran across a guy who was selling his '87GLE 4spd w/od. 300k miles for $800.
To me the miliage didn't mean anything. He sais he was having problems selling it locally because of the miliage on her. he just didn't find the right buyers. I suggested either craigslist or ebay. I WANTED to buy the car but I have too many I even called a friend of mine who was looking for a second car just find a good home for her.
He had every record from the local dealership of all the maintenance done on the car. If your smart in choosing your new car and a few trips to the PNP and you can get your new car back to near new condition.

Paint is another issue. I would say that this is the number one deciding factor in buying the car. Everything else car be worked on as needed.
Check local auction, online sites such as craigslist, local newspaper, ebay that are within driving distance by searching using city names or zip codes.

240 wagons? Not many around here 200

You wrote, "Check local auction, online sites such as craigslist, local newspaper, ebay that are within driving distance by searching using city names or zip codes." Good advice but poor pickings around here. This was a conservative area in the 1980s and 1990s, so most people then still bought Detroit iron. Also, because of generally low incomes, many cars were not maintained properly. A city like Houston has potential but that is a 7 hour drive. I'll keep looking. Oh, and you almost NEVER see manual transmission cars here. It's flat, reasonably low traffic density, no snow - I can't explain it.

240 wagons? Not many around here 200

In eastern PA you can find a manual in about every 3 to 4 '91 and older RWD Volvos. They're pretty common especially in the PNP.
            I'm still looking for a pre '90 744Ti 4 spd w/od. locally. Those owners just won't sell.

Why the wagons are so desirable 200

I bought an '88 245DL last summer to replace my rear-ended '89 245DL from a local private seller for $400. It had been sitting there for 2 months. I kept driving by and not stopping because I already had a wagon until that one was totaled. I only had to invest about $200 in parts and about 5 hours of work for her to pass inspection. I put over 25K miles on her just this last year with no problems what so ever. I've used her for going camping with the family of 6 with all the gear. I've used her to tow other cars and haul my construction tools (including a 10' brake) and materials all the while getting a consistant 25mpg.
Last week I picked up a 100 2x4x8' studs at the local home improvement store.
The guy came out with the studs on a pallet and said: "where's your truck?" I replied "right here!" He couldn't believe I was going to use this Volvo wagon untill I loaded the studs up and drove away. I could still see his jaw on the ground! BTW: I have overload springs from IPD and they are money well spent. This wagon isn't the prettiest girl at the ball but she will get you and everything/one else there everytime!!

I haven't been able to paste the pic from the gallery.

        Hey Volvofamily,

Is your '88 245 a standard or automatic? As I've mentioned quite a few times, I just purchased an '84 242 (last year of 2-door 240s) with an M46 for just $400. I had to spend $780 on replacing some parts to get it to pass emissions but it didn't diminish my great love for this car.

Why the wagons are so desirable 200

The '88 245DL is an automatic. My previous wagon was an '89 245DL 5spd. That one was a great wagon. It looked like an absolute beater!! The mechanics of the car was perfect. The previous owner of the wagon commuted to NYC. He didn't cared how it looked but it was faithfully maintained. That one got rear-ended.
One night I went through a DUI check point and the officer didn't say "Good evening sir have you been drinking" instead he immediately shined his flashlight on my inspection stickers.
I got this one to replace it but this one isn't a manual. Thats another project to do.

Those rear door speakers are cool. I didn't know they did component speakers from Volvo. Or are they custom?

The guy wouldn't issue a VIN number for a Carfax report. Hmmm...

Component door speakers only came in the '93 model year, mostly in wagons.

      eBay is the worst 200

Whew, I couldn't agree more. Folks treat eBay sales as fact. Forgetting (or not realizing) that some 60% of eBay car sales don't go through. And that it's a great way to create a bloated "market value" setting up the "The high bidder is taking his time and we need to sell it now so you can have it for ..." which is a steal because it's less than what it "sold" for.

        eBay is the worst 200

I bought one locally on ebay after seeing it in person with the originer owner. she was tired but solid. All records the size of a telephone book. He had omitted numerous problems with the car in the auction. I caught the problems when going over the car (all were minor but a lot of them)and then deducted the total amountof the parts costs from his asking price. I paid $500 for an '87 744GLE 250K 4 spd w/od. that my sister still drives with 285K now on the car.

If you are going to buy online then plan on seeing it in person and expecting everything is worn or broken on it. Then go from there. That way you will bid accoringly and won't be duped. You can laugh if it goes for more money because you know what shape it's in and how much more money they're going to have to put into it.

eBay - how can someone buy a car sight unseen? 200

I just don't understand it. Even if it is only a $500 or $1000 car - you know the thing has problems that the seller is not revealing or does not even recognize.

If you're either really carefull or really stupid! 200

It now comes down to why and how bad you want the car. If your handy enough and set your bid low enough then maybe it's worth it.
I almost bought an '84 242GLT sight unseen because there was good pics and I talked to the owner about the car and had a good "feeling" about it.
Otherwise I wouldn't have touched it with a ten foot pole.

It is crazy money for a 240, especially for one that clean. Then again, I paid only $400 for my '84 242 DL. Sure, it has its needs, but I love it, and it gets me from point A to point B.
