SU-HS6s How many flats is too many? 120-130 1968

I seem to have gotten past my terrible fuel economy - the main problem seems to have been binding rear brakes. I did take the opportunity to rebuild my carbs and I'm trying to get maximum economy from these now.

My SU HS6s sport new jets, new ball-bearing gross jets, solid plastic floats, new KN needles, and new throttle shafts along with new gaskets and seals. Throttle plates have had the vents riveted and soldered shut. This covers everything except machining the bushings.

There is no detectable movement from the new throttle shafts. That is, if I remove spring tension and grab the throttle shafts, I can't wiggle them up and down. I've felt the movement with the old worn shafts and I can say that I seem to have this covered now. No bushings need right now. Probably later, but okay now.

There is something a little weird about the throttle plates not completely sealing on the sides, but I *can* get my carbs balanced and the idle adjusted down to under 900 rpms.

I figure that this is a fairly "good" set. However...

I cannot seem to lean the carbs out without killing the engine. I have both adjusted out to 12 flats and the rear carb seems to be happy right here. It stumbles but does not die when I insert a flat screwdriver into the intake chamber. The forward carb is less happy and I actually have to richen it a couple flats before it runs properly at idle. I think the rear carb is at 11-12 flats while the forward carb is at 14-15 flats.

The good news is that the car idles and responds well, does not diesel on hot shutdown, nor does it behave differently at speed. Whatever it "up" seems to not be an air intake leak.

Still, this seemingly "rich" setting bothers me. Should I have the jets up so far?

Should this bare crescent of light on the edges of the throttle plates concern me? The decel-valve plates are so far the only "wear" part I have not replaced. There's no visible damage to the chamber edges from plates "rubbing" Maybe this is normal...?

Thanks as always.
