when my amazon warms up... 120-130 1967

okay,
so if ive been driving my 122 around for a while, and it warms up... it has a hard time starting back up. it does start, and it doesnt stall, it just turns over longer than it usually does.
also, where could i find an OEM voltage regulator in the US?

where could i find an OEM voltage regulator in the US?

Howdy,

The PN, from Swedish Treasures is 238640. But it listed there as "NA".

A search found this page:
http://www.oldvolvoparts.com/

which lists a phone number to call for inquiry: 714-963-3700 with no other information.

I looked up the number. Intelius reports that this is a business in Hunington Beach, California. It just might be legitimate even though their web "site" is nothing but a listing of part numbers.

You specifically asked for availability in the US but just in case, Scandcar in the Netherlands has one for €69.45:

This just might be the opportune time to change to a GM SI-10 alternator. I put a 55A one on my car with a homemade bracket. Ron Kwas sells mounting brackets to mount a GM style alternator. You can get the alternator at any parts house for less money than the regulator you are looking for.

Thanks,
I'll have to look into that. If I get the alternator, then I don't need a voltage regulator, is that it?
Thanks again.

You can use a stock volvo alternator... 120-130 1967

I should point out that you can install a stock volvo alternator in a later model volvo amazon.

If you have an original 67 B18 (or later) motor or a B20 of any stripe, you have a mounting ear for a volvo alternator cast right into the block. It is located just forward of the generator mount.

Both my 68 motors, both my 67 motors, and my 71 B20E all have the ear. This allows you to mount a volvo alternator (A bosch from a 1975 240 with AC is best). You would still need a voltage regulator, but it would be off-the-shelf and available for about $25.00 (or less) from just about anyone.

I've done this conversion with both my 67 and my 68. The 67 wagon has a 55 amp 1975-compatible alternator, while the 68 has a 35 amp model from a 1971 1800E. I also have another 55 amp model waiting for a rebuild.

The 35 amp conversion was free because I had the parts on a shelf. The 55 amp unit cost me about $75.00 for the replacement unit and $25.00 for the regulator. Both setups have been 100% trouble-free.

Ron's kits are excellent - well-made and well thought-out. The 1-wire, internal VR, AC Delco setup is also excellent, but if you have a proper volvo unit laying around, just be aware that you can bolt that sucker right on.

I like to stay as "volvo" as I can with my upgrades.

Oh, and if you want to stick with the 25 generator, I have two or three setups in my garage. I'd be happy to trade you a good "charging regulator" for something nominal.

Shannon;

Thanks for the reference certainly, but I need to clarify that while those cheapo $40 cheapo "rebuilds" are available, they are just not as reliable as they need to be. Quality properly rebuilt Delcos alts (with truly all new internals!) are around $100, so figure about $200 total outlay to do the alt conversion.

Cheers

Ron,

I agree, buy Delco rebuilds.

According to the online calculator, €69.45 = $108.11 for the regulator. Add shipping across the Atlantic with current fuel prices passed along to the consumer. Now figure brushes and springs, maybe bearings, for the generator. 67122 would, I think, have to farm out the generator reconditioning. Good luck finding someone who knows how to use a growler, let alone repair a shorted armature. Your bracket and a $100 Delco rebuild is beginning to look like a very attractive alternative.

67122,

I meant to ask earlier, what is wrong with your present voltage regulator? And, yes, a new Delco alternator would do away with the VR on the fender well.

Thanks,
Nothing is wrong with the vr i was just considering having the electrical system done over, just as a preventative thing.

Voltage regulators are available about anyplace that sells Bosch stuff.
They show up on ebay from time to time.

Are your carbs flooding? That will make them slow to start when hot.

Are your carbs ever wet or do they smell of gasoline?
If you take off the air cleaners do you see gasoline or lots of foggy vapor
when you lift the pistons?
Is your float level set right?
Are there gasoline stains on your carb heat shield?

Use hot-start procedure! 120-130 1967

?

...which is: Throttle to the floor (NO choke!), and crank starter until the extra cool air cools things off and it catches...this is the stated hot-start procedure in the manual also...typical, not indicative of a problem, and nothing new for around here...

...can't help with the VR, but try the "usual suspects"

Cheers
