m-46 overdrive slips

I'm having trouble with my '86 240. The problem first occured several months ago, when in reverse, the engine revved, but the car didn't move very fast. I suspected the overdrive. This problem has reoccured several times, but not very frequently. Recently the car has shuddered when starting off from a stop in first gear. I suspect the spraque clutch in the overdrive is slipping. Can anyone confirm this? Do I need a new clutch, or is it a hydraulic problem? Any help would be appreciated.

thanks,
josh

The J type was built by Laycockde Normanville.

Your better off looking at cleaning the solenoid.

http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/TransmissionManual.htm#ManualM46OverdriveSelfEngages

Then scroll down to Cleaning the OD solenoid.

Depending on how this sends out, you may have to paste both parts together.

Keep it simple.

It's probably the sprag clutch.
I've got an J-type OD with a bad one on my bench, but I've never replaced one in a Laycock de Normanville; I swapped the whole OD.
I have, however, replaced one in a Borg-Warner OD.
