Steering pump ran without fluid, is replacement necessary? 700 1989

I had a power steering rack installed on my car which was defective. It dumped all of the fluid into the boots on the rack. So the car ran for maybe 20 minutes to half an hour with very little or no fluid. Surely this was not good for the pump, but would this have done enough damage to warrant replacing it? Either way, I plan on thoroughly flushing the lines and pump before having the new rack installed.

I'd give it a try on the old pump. You'll know pretty quickly after you run it again the status of that pump. You'll lose some fluid that way because you'll have to drain and refill again, but it's cheaper than a new pwr steering pump, i'm sure.

    Good luck!

    It depends...?
I would say that if you can hear it groaning or whining, replace it. Also see if you can hear the bearings when turning it by hand.
I think the potential there for damage is the heat buildup in the pump's bearings from lack of fluid. If they are damaged, replace it.
