Split vacuum hose? 700 1990

Hi All,
my auto 740 GL has a small split in one of the vacuum hoses (from the air intake manifold?)...
it had happened before a few weeks ago and i shortened the hose to remove the split and it was AOK...
however, tonight whilst driving, as i came to a stop the engine stalled. it immediately started with no problems. then as i was driving slowly it happened again... this time as i started to accelerate. it just died. a quick off/on with the key and all was well.... i made it home without fault.

i'm assuming it is the same problem with a split or leaking hose. i can hear a hissing... i'll check in the morning. i hope it is just a question of replacing the hose.

has anyone had this problem before? any words of wisdom or reassurance?

cheers,
Jesper

ANSWER Split vacuum hose? 700 1990

Exactly what you would expect from a vacuum leak. While you're under the hood replacing the hose (or hoses - chances are they're all of the same vintage as the one that failed) check the bellows hose from the AMM to the throttle body. Over time, the bellows weaken and collapse, especially if they have blowby oil contamination, and that restricts the air intake, and can cause the same symptom.

Last year, my daughter's 89 740 couldn't get over 2000 RPM, and was stalling at stops. I found a small crack in a vacuum hose and a major bend in the bellows. After replacements, I took it out to the interstate, and went from 0 to 90 without a miss.

This post has been marked as an answer to the original question.

If you hear the hissing and it runs rough when you push on the brake peddle then the brake booster diaphram is probably bad. Also check for a loose or split intake hose. Usually a small vacuum line leak woun't cause that big a problem.
