Brake Booster Mounting 120-130

I finally got a brake booster standoff for mounting a booster to my 122.
The only trouble is that the only standoffs available are for 140 models which do not quite fit the pedalbox. I've resigned myself to getting some welding done. I know that Planetman was able to fabricate a booster mount that would fit the pedal box but I've not see a good picture of what the mount looks like.

Also... I have an 1800E style booster and master cylinder, but fitting that to the booster standoff will also require some modifications. Or... I need to find a 140 booster and master cylinder.

SO... either way I have to make some mods.

Would I see better performance and safety from an 71 1800E booster or a 140 Booster?

Are there any direct-fit bolt-on booster/MC substitutions?

    Brake Booster Mounting 120-130

    Hello,

I am not aware of a brake booster stand that Volvo made with only 2 holes with the correct hole spacing.

Someone posted a picture in a thread from one of your previous posts on this same topic that had only 2 holes, but it was probably fabricated like the one I have done.

I opted to add the third bolt, which was omitted on the unit I just previously metioned, to give the booster stand some more support like the 1969-1970 122S brake booster stand.

The flange I made to mount the 140 booster stand was quite easy to make and it only took about 3 hours not including the wait time for the flange to be cut from a 3/16" steel plate.

I have not yet installed my modified booster stand yet, although I now have a freshly rebuilt brake booster and new brake master ready and waiting to install.

Did you get the connecting shaft with the clevis and pin for the pedal with the 140 brake booster stand and did you get a used 140 brake booster?

There should have been a dust boot as well, which is still available new from Volvo.

I only got the stand itself. I have a full 1800E booster with all the parts and was going to use a high-strength threaded rod for the extension. The booster can has a perfect dustboot.

From you, specifically, I was hoping for the dimensions for that small mounting plate

I figure that I could either search for a 140 booster and MC to mount to the big-end stock plate and just modify the pedal-box side

      - or -

remove the big-end mount and have someone use the 1800E standoff as a pattern to cut me a flange for that side of the standoff. Keeping my (already on hand and working fine) 1800E booster/MC.

My only concern with the second option is that the 140 tube is a bit narrower than the 1800 tube and I worry that the dustboot might rub in there....

I'm also a little hesitant to permanently modify the booster stand, just in case I find a good 140 pancake and MC soon.

    Same or equivalent booster.

      Brake Booster Mounting 120-130

      Hello,

The 140 brake booster is a single servo type, as opposed to the 1800e brake booster which is dual servo type. The advantage to the dual servo is a smaller size can equal a larger unit single servo type. The disadvantage is the dual servos cost more to have rebuilt.

I looked in my factory Volvo repair manuals on specfications for the 2 different styles of brake booster and could find none.

I believe that they both produce about the same amount of boost as the 2 cars where not that much different in weight and both use the exact same 4 piston front calipers and the same rear 2 piston rear calipers.

164 also use a dual servo brake booster, but it is larger in diameter than the 1800e dual servo booster.

For ease of use, I have decided to use a 140 brake booster/master on my 1968 122 as the 140 brake booster stand is very easy to modify to make fit in place of the single circuit brake master on all pre-1969 122 with a manual transmission.

I assume that "single servo" = the pancake style booster and "dual servo" = the coffee can booster.

I have found both types on 140s and in fact the one on my 164 at the moment
came out of a late 140 in a salvage. If I remember correctly it did require
a minor mod to the pushrod but it is indeed the same booster. (the coffee can).
That is the booster I would choose for a 122 if one was indeed required.
