After trying unsucessfully with the forum search engine. I'm going to post this question before blindly buying a set of tires a set of newly acquired 15" Virgo wheels. What is the recommended tire size when using Virgo 15" wheels on a 240 wagon? Will 205/60 clear the wheelwells OK? Diameter is fairly close to 185/70R14, but I'm not so sure about the width clearance. Thanks much for your suggestions.

Can't check my tires right now, but I found an old post of mine that lists tire size and brand on my Virgos.
205/60/15 Federal brand (generic, I assume)
Still rolling on them!

We have three 240's currently running 15" wheels. One is lowered, two are not. If you'd like, I'll send you pictures. Correct me if I'm wrong, but you may be more concerned about appearance than speedo readings or final drive gearing. I know I am. A few MPH on the speedo can be lived with as long as you know about it and I'm not drag racing so final drive ratio is not really an issue either. I have Virgos on my lowered 245. I went with 205-60's because they fill the wheel well which is what looks right in my opinion. Since the Virgos were made for the 240, there are no rubbing issues out back except when heavily loaded, entering a very steep driveway at an extreme angle (very infrequent). Our '85 244 is running sirrius rims with 195's on them. The amount of wheel well showing looks so silly I'm thinking of putting the old corona's and 70's back on the car, though I may lower it instead. Just imagine what it would look like with 185-60's. These rims are made for 7-series and I believe there is more positive offset. When I had them on my lowered wagon, average driveways would get them rubbing the tires on the inner fender well. Virgos don't have the same problem even with the 205's. We have a Bertone with Enkeis on it that have the same offset as the virgos. Also running 205-60. The car is not lowered, but the tires go further toward filling the wheel wells. With the lower roof line, this is important to the appearance.
Of course you can put 70 series 15" tires on your rims, but with the wider rims they will look too narrow and they will probably be much too tall.

HI1
Guy`s there all ready said all facts. I just say my opinnion: You have there all highways, and interstates, ok they must also repair sometimes, but only those States where are nearly same system, which we have. Those are maybe in near Alaska, and Canada, but when I was there, all main roads were OK, but When I like to drive local roads, they were same condition, that Russian roads are now. But You know, Putin, and his "Friends" don`t drive there. What`ever if You have stock suspension and VIRGO`s : 195/60-15 is enough for all roads, 205/60-15 is Max tire size, if You have Original suspension. If You want more handling, that`s an another story, which I have said, when someone want`s power, first must build chassis and suspension, after think more POWER. OK I was also a "little bit warm, but when I wreck 11 cars , I learn that there is a vertcal-force, I can not beat it. If ALL excuse me now, I have taken few Jack Daniel`s. Forgive me....=.....

Stock on the Virgo was 195/60-15. I use 195/65-15 or 205/60-15. The 196/65 makes the speedo read perfectly against the police speed tracking radar around here.

The guy didn't say what model year wagon he had, so assuming it isn't the few years when a turbo wagon (with the 15-inch Virgo wheels) was offered, the list wouldn't list a tire size for a 15 inch wheel any more than it would for a 16 or 17 inch wheel. Would it?

You're right, I neglected to mention the year. It's a 93 wagon. 15" wheels were not standard that year. I have a set of Virgo 15s for it, and was looking for recommendations on a tire size that seems to work best. BTW, the car is a daily driver. From the replies so far, it seems like 205/65/15 might be a good choice.

A 205/60-15 tire is 627mm in diameter. Your original 184/82-14 (the default aspect ratio of your 185-14 tire is 0.82) is 659 mm. So your new tire would be nearly 5% too small, with your speedo-/odometer overreporting your speed and distance.
Also, that original tire had a load index of about 89 or 91, if I'm not mistaken. That's more than a 205/60-15 tire, I think (not 100% sure, but you can look it up).
You can live with this new size, but you have to decide if you want these shortcomings.

I didn't know that! Great tech info. This post will help me choose my next tire size.

Volvo offered the 240 wagon with the Turbo and Virgos prior to 1986...what size tires were used?...someone must know. It definitely was the 195/60 on the Turbo sedans.

The turbo wagons came with 195/60-15's and Virgos. The later cars are set up differently, intentionally changing speedometer readings for sedan and wagon speedos based on identical axle rpm's.
I ran 205/65-15's on Virgos on my 88 245 for the summer and 195/65-15 snows for winter.
Seem to work well and handling is stable.
For some more info on the available replacements for 185R-14 tires, see this site for VW Buses, which take the same size tires for some applications:
http://www.busdepot.com
They sell some reinforced-sidewall models suitable for Bus, Vanagon, and Volvo 245 applications.

My 81 242T came with 195/60/15's mounted on the Virgos
I ran 205/60/15's with no problems. I think a 215 would be too wide for the wheel.

I used 205-60-15 with good results.

Tried quite a few sizes but settled on 195-65-15.It is is a little small,
but provides good acceleration around town.
Sven's suggestion would be an excellent choice for freeway travel.
185-70-14 is sedan size.@24" wheel not 25.6" wagon size.
205-60-15, I would consider a street/cornering tire.
It depends...

Tire size calculator:
http://www.wickedbodies.net/Tire-Size-Calculator.htm
I'm using 205/65-15.
A near-perfect match for diameter of wagon's stock tire size.
No rubbing problems.
205/60-15 will be a smaller diameter than the stock 185/R-14's.
195-70-15 would be fine but it's hardly made and sold at all.
185/70R14 is the right size for 240 sedans.
Check the sticker in your passenger door to see your right size.
Might be different from 185/R-14 if yours is a turbo or something unusual.
